GOSHEN, Ind. - The conference win streak for the Maple Leafs softball team was extended to seven games on Saturday after a doubleheader sweep of Saint Francis, a team receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll. Goshen won 3-2 and 6-1.
Game One
Shea VanScoter started the Goshen scoring in the first inning of game one with a home run to center field. This was the 24th home run of her career, passing
Alisyn Catenacci ('24) for second-most in program history. She sits only behind Ri Koteles ('22), who had 35.
VanScoter came up to bat again in the second inning and hit an RBI groundout that scored
Carissa Fillingame. Later in the inning,
Alyssa McDonald hit a bunt single to score
Kamille Badibanga and made it a 3-0 game.
Goshen starter
Esme Pico didn't allow a hit for the first three innings and no runs through the first five and two thirds. The Cougars had a home run in the sixth to make it 3-1 and an RBI double in the seventh to cut the Goshen lead to one.
Shea VanScoter came into the game to get the final out and recorded the save.
The save was VanScoter's fifth of the season - the most in the Crossroads League. Pico went 6.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and four hits. She had four strikeouts and now has a 2-3 record this season.
Carissa Fillingame had a 3-3 performance with a run. It was her first three-hit game since April 27, 2024, against Spring Arbor.
Tatem Adams was 2-2 with a walk. Her season batting average was .111 after the first of two games against Huntington on March 22 but it was up to .500 after the first game against USF.
Game Two
The Cougars took the lead first in game two, but this time the Leafs would do the rest of the scoring to close it out.
The Cougars had a solo homer in the second inning and led 1-0 after three innings. In the fourth,
Camryn Barrows stole home on a double steal and
Kamille Badibanga hit a sac fly to give the Maple Leafs the lead. The lead grew in the fifth with a two-RBI double from
Brinleigh Arredondo and a single from
Carissa Fillingame that scored Arredondo after a fielding error. In the sixth,
Bianca Diamond's RBI single made it a 6-1 game.
Shea VanScoter got the start after getting the save in game one, and she pitched a complete game win. Now with a 2-3 record on the season, she delivered a stellar performance with one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts and just one walk. She has a 3.91 ERA this season.
VanScoter, Arredondo, Fillingame and Badibanga all had two hits each for Goshen. Arredondo had two runs with a double and a stolen base. The Leafs ended a four-game losing streak against Saint Francis. The last time they allowed three runs or fewer against the Cougars over a two-game span was in April 2017.
The Leafs are now 15-17 overall, 11-11 in the Crossroads League and 8-6 at home. GC is at Bethel on Monday, April 14, at 3:00 pm.
