VanScoter sets career hits record as Leafs split with Foresters

McDonald tied the record for triples in a season with her fifth of the year

GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen softball split a doubleheader with Huntington on Saturday afternoon in Goshen. The Leafs won game one 9-5 whereas the Foresters won game two 6-2.

Game One
The first game was highlighted by Shea VanScoter setting the program record for career hits on a three-run home run. The seniors's bomb down the left field line gave Goshen a 4-0 lead after Esme Pico had already hit an RBI single. VanScoter had an RBI single when the Leafs led 4-3 to start a scoring run in the middle of the game. Tatem Adams added an RBI double, Brinleigh Arredondo an RBI single, and Carissa Fillingame's two-run homer made it 9-3. Huntington scored a couple of late runs but GC came through with a 9-5 win.

The previous career hits record was set by Ri Koteles ('22) with 236 hits. VanScoter has 43 hits this season with six more regular season games scheduled and at least one postseason game up ahead.

Esme Pico earned the win and is 6-6 this year. She pitched all seven innings and allowed five earned runs. VanScoter went 2-4 with a run and four RBIs. Alyssa McDonald was a perfect 4-4 with a double, a run and a stolen base. VanScoter and McDonald combined for six of Goshen's 11 hits.

Game Two
The top moment from game two was Alyssa McDonald tying the single-season record with her fifth triple. She now has two seasons with five triples while every other player in program history has managed a total of two five-triple seasons.

Goshen went up 2-1 after McDonald's RBI triple in the third and an RBI single from Tatem Adams in the same inning. In the bottom of the third, Brinleigh Arredondo had a three-run home run robbed at the wall, to keep the game at 2-1. Unfortunately, the remaining runs were all for the Foresters as they went on to win 6-2.

Camryn Barrows had the loss and allowed five earned runs in seven innings. Three of Goshen's four hits went for extra-bases. In addition to McDonald's triple, Shea VanScoter and Bianca Diamond hit doubles.

Goshen is guaranteed a Crossroads League tournament spot and could theoretically still finish as high as third place. The Maple Leafs are at Spring Arbor on Tuesday, at 3:00 pm.
