Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Justin DeWeese

Goshen dominates CCSJ 8-0, puts up most goals in season opener since 1988

It was Goshen's most goals in a home game since 2005

GOSHEN, Ind. - It only took 29 seconds into the regular season for the Goshen men's soccer team to score their first goal of the year. They added another seven over the course of the night in a dominant 8-0 shutout over Calumet College of St. Joseph.

As the stands filled with new Goshen College first-years on their first evening on campus, Jethro Ndyomugabe became the first GC goal scorer of the season with his shot from an assist by Iker Fernandez-Andes. And while the score stayed at 1-0 for a while, Goshen quickly got two in a row as Eli Simones followed his missed penalty shot with a header goal in the 28th minute and Tim Groenenberg scored just 26 seconds later to make it 3-0. Right before the half, Groenenberg won a 50-50 ball and ended up scoring his second goal of the evening.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Ndyomugabe had his second goal - off an Eli Simones cross to the left post. Groenenberg had his first assist of the night in the 70th minute as Diogo Coelho scored. Just 63 seconds after that, Arturo Hernandez-Barrera scored on a pass from Nathan Anderson. The last GC goal was from a penalty kick, successfully completed by Nicholas Whitaker.

Goshen had 39 total shots and 28 shots on goal - both their highest totals since the NAIA began collecting game-by-game stats in 2007. It was the first time the Maple Leafs put up eight goals since 2018, and Whitaker and Coelho became the first freshmen to score in a season opener since Ollie Smith did son on August 19, 2016 against Purdue Northwest.

The eight goals is Goshen's highest total in a season opener since September 7, 1988 in a 9-2 win over Bethel. It's also the most goals, and largest margin of victory, in a home game since September 15, 2005 during a 10-1 win over Rochester.

Defensively, the Leafs held the Crimson Wave to four shots and one shot on goal. CCSJ had 20 saves whereas Goshen needed just one.

Goshen is at Madonna on Saturday, August 23, at 2:00 pm.
