LIVONIA, Mich. - After an 8-0 season opener win on Thursday, the Goshen men's soccer team lost their second game of the season at Madonna. Madonna, who is receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll, won 9-0.
There wasn't much action from either team for the first 20 minutes of play, and the Leafs started out strong. However, after the Crusaders scored in the 24th minute from a solid cross to the left side, they scored their second goal less than three minutes later after an errant play by the Goshen defense that resulted in a Madonna takeaway with an open field ahead. The Leafs prevented any more scoring in the half but only had one shot themselves. Madonna had five first half shots.
The second half was much more one-sided, as the home team scored seven goals in the 45-minute span. That included five goals in a 20-minute span from the 51st through the 71st minutes. Madonna had 19 second-half shots while Goshen had none.
Goshen's lone shot in the game, a shot on goal, came from
Iker Fernandez-Andes. Goalkeeper
Joao Brasiliano made eight saves while allowing nine.
Diogo Coelho was issued a red card in the 44th minute.
Goshen (1-1) is next in action on Saturday, August 30, against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College at 2:00 pm.
