GOSHEN, Ind. - After a 2024 season which saw a lack of offense and one win all year, the Goshen women's soccer team started the 2025 campaign with an important 2-1 win over Lawrence Tech at home.
The Leafs were outshot 4-2 in the first half, but one of those two shots was a goal from freshman
May Boudreau that hit off the crossbar and barely went in after she gathered a loose ball from the defender. Similarly, just under two minutes after halftime, Lawrence Tech scored on a goal that hit the bar and just crossed the line. Both teams put up more shots in the second half - GC with 11 and LTU with nine.
In the 86th minute,
Sophia Yoder broke the tie from a through ball from
Eliana Lang. After maneuvering around the goalkeeper, she was able to get it past another defender and give the Leafs the lead for the second time. Goshen was able to strategically hold on to the ball in the final minutes to secure the one-goal victory.
Yoder's goal was her first since August 26, 2023 against Cornerstone. Before Boudreau, she was also Goshen's most recent freshman to have scored in a season opener. This was Goshen's first Friday home game since September 11, 2015, which was also against Lawrence Tech.
Eliana Lang and
Yvonne Friedmann led the Maple Leafs with three shots apiece.
May Boudreau was the only Goshen player with two shots on frame.
Aina Lopez made five saves in her 90 minutes in goal. She has allowed just three goals in her last six games going back to last year.
Goshen (1-0) hosts Olivet Nazarene on Wednesday, August 27, at 7:00 pm.
