Late goals lead to Goshen's second shutout win of the season

Portocarrero and Ndyomugabe score for the Maple Leafs against SMWC

GOSHEN, Ind. - While both teams were held scoreless for the majority of the match, two late goals from Alejandro Portocarrero and Jethro Ndyomugabe gave the Maple Leafs a 2-0 shutout victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday afternoon. Gabriel Viau made three saves in goal.

Goshen had ten first-half shots to four for the Pomeroys. Yet they were still unable to find the back of the net. And while the Maple Leafs were building momentum with under 20 minutes to go in the match and a series of shots, the tide truly shifted after Jacobo Galvez picked up his second yellow card, thus earning a red card and putting SMWC down one player. The resulting free kick taken by Eli Simones found Alejandro Portocarrero, making the score 1-0. Less than seven minutes later, Nicholas Whitaker connected with Jethro Ndyomugabe for his third goal of the young season.

This was the first time in at least the last 15 years that Goshen had been tied in the last 15 minutes and gone on to win by multiple goals. The Leafs had eight shots on goal and 21 total shots. SMWC had three shots on goal and eight total shots. The Pomeroys committed 18 fouls to Goshen's 11. Whitaker and Portocarrero had two shots on goal each. Stephen Bandi had five total shots, William Jackson had four and Whitaker added four as well.

The Leafs host Siena Heights on Wednesday, September 3, at 7:30 pm.
