Wolfe surpasses 1,000 digs, Leafs split on last day of Showdown in the Woods

Goshen also ended a 14-set win streak for SMWC

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. - The women's volleyball team left the Showdown in the Woods tournament with a 3-1 record, and are now sitting at 4-6 overall. On Saturday they beat Great Lakes Christian 25-15, 25-8, 25-18 and lost to the host, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, 25-18, 17-25, 12-25, 19-25.

Goshen vs Great Lakes Christian
In their first match, Goshen displayed their best hitting percentage of the season at .315. It was their highest hitting percentage in a match since September 2, 2023 in a win over IUPUC. The second set was particularly dominant, as the Leafs started on a 9-0 run and never took the foot off the gas. They had 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .481 in that set alone.

Like the day before, the Leafs dominated in aces with 13 compared to two for the Crusaders. Goshen had more than double the kills (40-17) and assists (35-14) compared to Great Lakes Christian. Sydney Stutsman had six aces in addition to her 23 assists and seven digs. In the first three matches of the tournament, Stutsman averaged 1.6 aces per set. Kassidy Faler had three aces of her own. A pair of freshmen led the Leafs in the kills category. Addison Ross had 11 and Amelie Martinez was right behind with ten. Armani Guidry-Austin posted two solo blocks and a block assist and Alaina Wolfe had 11 digs.

Goshen vs Saint Mary-of-the-Woods
The Pomeroys improved their season record to 9-1 after they defeated the Maple Leafs and went to 10-1 later in the day by defeating Great Lakes Christian. Through four matches in the tournament, Goshen was the only team that won a set against them.

That first set win for the Leafs ended a streak of 14 consecutive sets that the Pomeroys had won against their opponents. It was also the largest point differential in a set that SMWC has lost this season. Goshen had 14 kills and a .312 hitting percentage in the seven-point first set win. The Leafs won the first three points and never lost the lead the rest of the way.

The host team found their groove, though, and won the next set by eight before taking the third set by 13. They had 12 kills, one attack error and a hitting percentage of .500 in that set. They then went on to win the fourth set by six and took the match 3-1.

Alaina Wolfe surpassed 1,000 career digs in the match. She finished with 22, leading all players on the court. Amelie Martinez had 11 kills and Nevaeh Benjamin put down ten. Sydney Stutsman had 20 assists.

Goshen starts Crossroads League play on Wednesday, September 3, at 7:00 pm at home against Taylor.
