GOSHEN, Ind. - Women's volleyball picked up their first Crossroads League win of the season in a thrilling five-set home match on Saturday afternoon. The Maple Leafs won 14-25, 25-18, 25-22, 26-28, 15-11.
This was the second year in a row that Goshen beat Saint Francis, but it was their first home win against the Cougars since September 7, 2016. Goshen had won six sets against USF in the last three matches. Their previous six set wins against them spanned 13 matches.
Alaina Wolfe was recognized before the match for reaching 1,000 career digs at the Showdown in the Woods tournament. Once the teams got underway, Goshen led 8-7 when the Cougars went on a 7-0 run and cruised through the rest of the first set. GC answered in the next set when down 10-9. They finished the set on a 16-8 run. The teams were tied 21-21 in the third, but Goshen won four of the last five points to go up two sets to one.
Goshen prevented the Cougars from scoring on three different set points in the fourth set, but a service error followed by an attack error led to a 28-26 win for USF. However, a 6-0 run in the middle of the fifth set followed by winning the last four points of the match resulted in a 15-11 fifth-set win.
Goshen had three players with double-digit kills -
Nevaeh Benjamin,
Amelie Martinez and
Armani Guidry-Austin.
Sydney Stutsman had 24 assists and
Carle Bruggema had 17.
Alaina Wolfe had 11 digs. Guidry-Austin also had an impressive .450 hitting percentage, two solo blocks and two block assists.
