GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen women's volleyball team lost the first of two U.S. Highway 20 Cup matchups with Bethel on Wednesday night at Gunden Gymnasium. The Pilots won 25-10, 25-17, 25-16.
With Bethel up 10-6 in the first set, the visitors went on an 8-0 run to triple Goshen's score at 18-6 on the way to a 25-10 win. The next set saw Goshen start with a 5-1 advantage but Bethel went up 10-7. The Leafs cut the lead to one until BU scored six in a row and never looked back, winning the set by eight.
Similarly, Goshen started by winning four of the first five points in the third set and Bethel used a timeout when the Maple Leafs led 8-3. The Pilots went on an 11-2 run which forced a Goshen timeout. The Bethel lead only grew, however, and they won the third set 25-16.
Goshen had five blocks compared to four for Bethel, but the Pilots dominated in kills, aces and assists.
Nevaeh Benjamin had three blocks assists and
Armani Guidry-Austin and
Carmin Corey had two each.
Brenna Spangler had a solo block and a block assist.
Guidry-Austin, Corey and Spangler all had at least five kills and hitting percentages over .200.
Sydney Stutsman had 12 kills and
Carle Bruggema had seven. Six Goshen players had at least three digs each.
