Maple Leafs fall to #2 IWU in their Pink Out match up

The Leafs and Wildcats came together to raise awareness about breast cancer

GOSHEN, Ind. - Women's soccer welcomed the #2 Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats to the John Ingold Athletic Complex for their annual Pink Out, where they lost 5-0.

For the first 20 minutes of the contest, the Goshen defense was equal to IWU's offense. The majority of the Wildcats' shots didn't trouble goalkeeper Hailey Ballast, who only made two saves in that time. The Wildcats got their breakthrough in the 25th minute, when a cross into the box struck a Goshen hand, resulting in a penalty kick for the Wildcats. Alyssa Hamann stepped up and sent Ballast the wrong way, giving them the advantage.

The Wildcats only grew in confidence from there. Four minutes later, they doubled their advantage, when a corner from Sam Anderson floated into the box and ended up in the back of the Goshen net for an Olimpico goal.

Three minutes later, the Wildcats got their third goal. A loose ball fell to Breena Ireland, who found the back of the net from outside the box. They got their fourth another three minutes later when the ball found Sydney Couch, who fired home from the edge of the box. The half ended 4-0.

The Wildcats continued to apply pressure to the Maple Leaf defense, recording 10 shots before the hour mark including a crossbar hit in the 53rd minute. Maple Leaf substitute goalkeeper Amara Torrey had nine saves in the first 30 minutes of the half.

The Wildcats got their only goal of the second half in the 78th minute, when Carlie Grosser beat her defender and took a shot from a tight angle and found the back of the net with help from the right post.

The only Maple Leaf shot of the contest came in the 84th minute, through Dani Maranhão.

The Maple Leafs are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 when they travel to Huntington University to take on the Forresters. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
