Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Liam Shaw

Maple Leafs go undefeated in Homecoming tri-match

A big day for the Leafs with multiple players earning career highs

GOSHEN, Ind. - Women's volleyball hosted a Homecoming tri-match, where they welcomed the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Calumet College of St. Joseph. The Maple Leafs won both of their matches on a score of 3-1.

Goshen took to the court in the first game as they faced UMD. The Wolverines jumped into a 2-0 lead, before Goshen scored three unanswered to claim their first lead of the match. From here, UMD went on a 13-2 run, including five service aces, to lead 15-5. Both teams exchanged points until the score sat at 20-10, before a 4-0 run gave the Wolverines set point. Goshen rallied back, with Railynn Bowman scoring two kills and UMD committing an attack error, but it was too late, as a kill from Dearborn's Monte Rotter put the set to bed.

Much like the first set, the second started with both teams putting together two unanswered points each. This time, it was the Leafs who put together a run from here, as they went on an 8-2 run, as Jessie Price scored on an ace and Carmin Corey, Bowman and Emese Southwick all got kills. The momentum of the set then momentarily swung in each team's direction, as the Wolverines scored four unanswered before Goshen scored three unanswered. Both teams then exchanged points, until an attacking error from UMD and a kill from Southwick gave the Leafs the set and a foothold in the match.

Goshen started hot in the third set, as they went on their biggest run of the match, scoring 11 unanswered, as Corey, Armani Guidry-Austin and Southwick all got kills and Price scored on back to back service aces. UMD then scored four with no reply and from here, neither team could go on a notable scoring run until the score sat at 21-8 before Corey scored on a kill and Sydney Stutsman recorded a hat trick of aces to give the Leafs the third set.

Goshen got out to a fast start again in the fourth set. Bri Morris scored on three service aces and Corey scored three kills as they went 7-0 ahead. The Wolverines put another 4-0 run together before Goshen went on a 6-2 run to lead 13-7. The teams exchanged scoring runs until the score sat at 22-19, where a brace of Bowman kills and attacking errors gave the Leafs the set, and ultimately the match.

Bowman had a career high in kills with 12, Price had a career high in aces with five and Morris bettered her career high in assists by three, as she had 41.

UMD then faced off against Calumet, where they came out on top on a score of 3-1

At 5 p.m., the Leafs took to the court again, this time to face off against Calumet. The Leafs started out well, with a Calumet attacking error and a kill by Sami Lard giving them a 2-0 cushion, before a 10-0 Calumet run left them trailing by eight. The Leafs put a 3-0 run together from here, with Mary Osten scored on a service ace and Ava Schneider scoring on a kill. Calumet then put together a 5-0 run before the teams exchanged points until the score sat at 18-7, where Ava Schneider and Corey contributed to a 4-0 run. The teams then put together runs of two or three, before Calumet were at match point at 24-16. The Leafs closed the deficit with an attack error from Calumet and a kill from Southwick, before a Calumet kill gave them the first set.

The Leafs got out to a 10-3 run to start the second set as Guidry-Austin, Bowman, Southwick and Schneider all picked up kills. Sami Lard was moved to libero for Mary Osten early in the set, and she picked up an ace and an assist during this run. Goshen and Calumet went back and forth in scoring until the set stood at 13-8, where Goshen went on a 6-1 run. The back and forth nature of the set continued until the Leafs had set point at 24-18. A series of five attacking errors from Goshen put Calumet a point behind, before a kill from Corey gave Goshen set two.

Goshen held the lead to start the third set, until a run from Calumet tied the set at 10. The teams were then tied at 11, 13 and 14, before kills from Southwick, Schneider, Morris, Bowman, and a number of Calumet attack errors resulted in a 11-0 run to bring the Leafs to set point. Calumet got a point back through a Goshen attack error, before a service error gave the Leafs the third set.

It was Calumet who got off to a better start in the fourth set. They led 8-7m before two kills from Guidry-Austin and a service ace from Stutsman alongside a service error gave the Leafs an 11-8 lead. Calumet then rallied back to tie the game at 14, before Goshen pulled away again thanks to two errors from Calumet. Bowman, Schneider and Corey all contributed to a 5-0 run. Each team had a 3-0 run of their own as the Leafs got to match point. Calumet pulled one point back, before a kill from Corey gave the Leafs the match.

Bowman increased her career high from earlier in the day by four, as she recorded 16 kills. Corey matched her season high in kills with 12, and recorded a career high of 15 digs. The team recorded a season-high tying 9 blocks, equalling their performance from their game against Bethel.

The Maple Leafs are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 7 as they take on the #13 Taylor University Trojans at the Ruth Gunden Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
