Leafs pull close but fall to (RV) Huntington 60-52

Goshen's seven blocks in a conference game was their highest total since January 2025

GOSHEN, Ind. - For the fourth straight game, Goshen women's basketball faced a team that was either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll. The Leafs went 1-3 in those games, as Huntington came to Goshen and defeated the Leafs 60-52 on Wednesday night.

The Foresters are receiving votes in the latest NAIA coaches poll, which was released earlier in the day on Wednesday. The teams started slow and were tied 11-11 when Huntington went on a 4-0 run at the end of the first quarter. Goshen took a brief lead in the second quarter at 24-23 after a basket from Zy'Ann Phinezy, capping an 8-2 run. Huntington had an 8-2 run of their own to finish the half and go up 38-30, including a shot at the buzzer by Teegan Acres.

The Foresters grew their lead in the third quarter, holding Goshen to eight points but only scoring 11 of their own. The Maple Leafs were only down 53-49 with 3:20 to go in the fourth quarter once Carrie Hiler hit a three pointer after a steal from Kyla Foster. That was the last made field goal for the Leafs though, with their remaining three points coming from free-throws in a 60-52 loss.

Zy'Ann Phinezy led the team with ten points but also had seven of the 13 turnovers. This was her highest point total in a game since January 17. She also had a solid showing the last time the Leafs faced Huntington, scoring 11 that time around. Sarah Elfrey had seven rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench, tying her season high for a Crossroads League game. Goshen's seven blocks as a team are their most in a conference game since posting ten against Spring Arbor on January 8, 2025.

The Leafs are at #16 Spring Arbor on Saturday, February 14, at 1:00 pm.
