FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The two-game conference winning streak for men's basketball came to an end on Saturday. After wins over Marian and #24 Taylor, Goshen lost at Saint Francis despite 18 points from
Marcus Northern. The Cougars prevailed 80-71.
This was the fewest points Goshen has allowed USF to score in the last seven matchups. The Maple Leafs were playing from behind from the get-go, but were never fully out of it until the closing seconds. After a 9-0 run, USF was up 18-7 before the Leafs closed the gap to three points multiple times. At the half, the home team's lead was at six, 36-30.
The Leafs came back from the locker room on a 7-2 run to pull within one after a
Marcus Northern three, but a three by Jevon Lewis prevented the Leafs from getting any closer. The Saint Francis lead extended to 13 at 54-41 and Goshen answered with a 13-4 run. The Cougars followed it with a 10-0 run, and the Leafs responded once more with a 9-1 run.
Caleb Thompson hit a three with 37 seconds to go to make it a two-possession game at 77-71. However, the Leafs missed their final two shots and the Cougars completed an 80-71 win.
Goshen had their best free-throw shooting percentage in a conference game (83.3%) in over a year, but their 12 free-throw attempts was their fewest this season.
Marcus Northern had 18 points and sits at 957 for his career. This was his highest point total in the last seven games and his sixth game in the last eight with five or more rebounds.
Jacob Carlson had a career-high seven rebounds to go with his 12 points and
Joshua Gentry tied a career-best with six boards.
Kamren Williams' six rebounds tied a season-high and
Kenny May had five or more rebounds for a second straight game.
Caleb Thompson tied a career-high with three made three-pointers in the game. He finished with 11 points.
