MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Maple Leafs have secured their first win of the season in a decisive start to day one of the Blue Angel Bash. Goshen swept Mount Mary in three sets, which resulted in scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-20. This leaves them undefeated against the Blue Angels.
The Leafs were once again led in kills by Ava Schneider with nine who was hitting .500 in that match, as well as picking up two blocks. Carmin Corey also had nine kills and was closely followed by Armani Guidry-Austin with eight. Sydney Stutsman and Carle Bruggema once again went about split on assist — this time Stutsman with 13 and Bruggema with 14.
The Leafs also scored a number of points from service aces, recording 9 on the match. Corey led with three, followed by Stutsman, Mary Osten, and Jessie Price, all with two.
A highlight for the Leafs was a 9-0 run to start the second set, bringing the energy from their success in the first set. There was a similar occurrence at the start of the third set when Goshen went on a run of five and then four to once again set themselves up for success early on.
Goshen carried this energy in a first set victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, where they took the Pomeroys 25-22. However, after winning four sets in a row on the day, the energy dropped off a bit from the Leafs, and they fell in the next three sets 25-19, 25-16, 25-10.
Osten, Price, and Stutsman all recorded more than 10 digs in the match, with 16, 10 and 12 respectively, but it wasn't enough to carry the Leafs through. Despite 11 kills from Corey and nine from Railynn Bowman, 10 Pomeroys recorded kills in the match, rather than just five for the Maple Leafs. In the end, an 8-0 run at the start of the fourth set was enough to finish off the match.
The Leafs are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 22 at 1:15 and 3:30 p.m. They will face Mount Marty and then Waldorf as they aim to improve from 1-5 on the season so far.
