GOSHEN, Ind. - Women's soccer took on Cornerstone in their home opener for the 2026 season. Cornerstone came away the victors on a scoreline of 5-0.
Cornerstone got off to a hot start, scoring two goals in the first twenty minutes. The first goal came inside just four minutes, when Gracie Gortmaker found its way past Isaura Toledo. Gortmaker doubled the Golden Eagles advantage in the 18th minute when her curling effort nestled in the back of the net. The Golden Eagles made it 3-0 on the half hour mark when Mady Teffner scored off of a rebound from a corner. They made it 4-0 before half time, when Jada VanNoord set Sammi Beller through and Beller lobbed the ball over the onrushing Toledo from outside the area.Â
In the second half, the Maple Leafs began to settle and create some goalscoring opportunities of their own. Sophia Yoder managed to test Cornerstone goalkeeper Corinne McGlassion on two occasions, but neither effort was enough to give the Maple Leafs a foothold in the contest.Â
The only goal in the second half came in the 59th minute. VanNoord stepped up to take a free kick just outside the Goshen penalty area and fired past substitute goalkeeper and debutant Hailey Ballast with a wonderful strike that found the top left corner of the Goshen goal.Â
The only disciplinary action of the game came in the 67th minute, when Natalie Boulier was issued a yellow card for a foul in the Goshen defensive third.Â
Toledo and Ballast faced a combined 34 shots throughout the contest, saving 14 of them. Toledo's nine saves in 45 minutes is a career high. Her previous best of eight against St. Francis was also done in just a single half of play.
The Maple Leafs are back in action on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 12 p.m. as they travel to South Bend to take on Indiana University South Bend.
