Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College volleyball team pulled its record back to .500 for the season on Wednesday night with a four-set victory over Marian University at Gunden Gymnasium.
The Maple Leafs jumped out to early leads in each of the first two sets (7-2 in the first and 7-3 in the third), only to see Marian call timeout and claw back to force a tie in either case. After a pair of back-and-forth stanzas finished in a split with Goshen winning 25-23 and then losing 25-18, the hosts claimed the final two sets 25-22 and 25-16 to win the match.
Lexa Magnuson finished with a match-high 13 kills for Goshen (12-12, 4-9 Crossroads League) while Whitney Peterson had 12. Both members of that duo hit above .360 in the match, while Natalie Hubby (.333) and Katy Anspach (.308) contributed six kills apiece and two more high hitting percentages. As a team, Goshen hit .350 with 17 kills in the third stanza.
Defensively, libero Danielle Plank had 16 digs to lead the Maple Leafs. Kelsey Smith chipped in 13 digs and a match-high 22 assists: AlyxaKay Shields had a match-high 19 digs for Marian (5-12, 3-8 CL).
Goshen was able to assert its dominance at the net, ending nine points on stuffs while having only four attacks stopped. Magnuson finished with seven blocks including two solos to lead the team.
The Maple Leafs host another match in less than 48 hours when Bethel College visits Gunden Gymnasium on Friday night in a local rivalry and Crossroads League meeting. First serve is set for 7 p.m. after Senior Night festivities.
