CHICAGO — Gabby Williams made 12 of her 13 points, scoring the most points of any Maple Leaf yet this season, as the Goshen College women's basketball team rebounded to defeat Trinity International University 82-65 on Saturday night.

Jo'Mani Thomas added a season-high 20 points of her own and Lynnia Noel scored 15 behind four three-point field goals: the Maple Leafs shot 24-for-43 inside the arc, pulled down 21 offensive rebounds and posted 38 points in the paint.

"I was very pleased with our heart, passion and effort tonight," said Goshen head coach Stephanie Miller. "We took control of the glass, put smart pressure on their guards and hit some key shots down the stretch. Williams and Thomas stepped up huge on the glass, and Noel stretched their zone and knocked down some threes at big times."

Goshen's 41 rebounds were eight more than the total of the hosting Trojans, who led only once, at 3-0 in the opening minutes. Williams led all players with 12 rebounds: Tyra Carver had six along with eight points. Sophia Sears led Goshen with three steals.

The win moved Goshen to 5-1 on the season and provided a much-needed opportunity to regroup following a 98-73 loss at the University of Saint Francis on Friday night.

"We came into the game confident but just got outplayed," Miller said. "They executed at a very high level and exposed some weaknesses that we clearly needed to learn about."

Most of the 25-point margin came from the first quarter, which ended with the Saints up 31-13 and having made more than half of their field-goal attempts.

"I liked that we didn't fall apart from the obstacle but stayed focused and tried to chip away," said Miller. "With that said, we put ourselves in too deep of a hole and had to settle for learning about mental toughness.

Despite the defeat, the Maple Leafs put four players in double figures, led by 15 points from Liz Tecca. Thomas added 13 points, Keshia Ward 12, and Williams 11. St. Francis (3-0) got 22 points from Jordan Giddings, who shot 8-for-8 from the floor and 5-for-5 from three-point range.

USF shot 57.4 percent (39-for-68) overall, holding Goshen to 46.4 percent. The hosts made 20 of their first 33 shots.

Thomas pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, missing a double-double by a single carom. Tecca registered four assists and Sears three.

The Maple Leafs have five days off, their longest such stretch of the season, before playing a pair of games next weekend at the Hoops for Hope event hosted by Grace College. Goshen plays Roosevelt University to begin the classic at 5 p.m. Friday.
