Leafs Showcase Depth, Match 2000 Squad in Win Over Trolls

Box Score

Tyra Carver scored a season-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and all 15 Goshen College women's basketball players saw the floor as the Maple Leafs remained unbeaten with a 79-47 victory over Trinity Christian on Friday afternoon.

Keshia Ward scored 13 points, one of four Goshen players to tally in double figures, and Gabby Williams posted her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

The Maple Leafs jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes and change, pulling ahead by double digits with 3:55 left in the quarter and staying there the rest of the way. Goshen's defense held the Trolls to 3-of-17 shooting in the opening stanza and at 27 percent (16-for-60) for the game; Goshen, meanwhile, made 53 percent of its shots and pulled down 48 rebounds.

"This was the first time we have truly been clicking on all cylinders," said Goshen coach Stephanie Miller. "After the experience down at IPFW on Wednesday, I believe we were well-focused on playing at a high level tonight. We had very well-rounded performances from our starters tonight."

In addition to Williams's double-double, which wasn't even among the five starters' performances, Ward and Jo'Mani Thomas grabbed six rebounds apiece while combining for 23 points. Liz Tecca had four assists and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line, and Sophia Sears gave out five dimes as well.

But seven more Maple Leafs cracked the scoring column: just as every player played at least five minutes, none played more than 22. The reserves accounted for nearly 40 percent of the scoring, with Angela McLean posting a career-high seven points. Freshmen Allie Lake and Haley Archibeque scored for the first time in Goshen uniforms as well."

"The depth we played with and the bench productivity really stole the show tonight," Miller said. "Angela was very productive with her minutes and has been really starting to take steps forward. It was great to see the team so ready for the game, not showing signs of fatigue after three games in four days. Consistency is key for us and so far, we are off to a good start."

The Maple Leafs are 3-0 for the first time since 2000 and look to take their win streak to four on Tuesday in their last home game before a three-week road trip. Goshen will face Michigan-Dearborn in the first game of a women-men doubleheader: tip-off in Gunden Gymnasium is set for 6 p.m.
