Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — A season-high 61 rebounds buoyed the Goshen College women's basketball team to its 11th win of the season Tuesday night in a 76-60 win over Adrian College.
The Maple Leafs (11-1, 3-0 Crossroads League) scored the game's first 18 points, holding the visiting Bulldogs off the board until 25.2 seconds remained in the first quarter, and led 32-11 at the intermission. Goshen never trailed and the game's only tie was at 0-0 in the opening minute.
"It was great to get back on the court after nine days off and we showed up ready to compete right from the opening tip," said Goshen head coach Stephanie Miller. "The defense was as good as it has been in quite a while which allowed us to work through some rusty offense. We were not very sharp, but I will take the energy and effort level that the team put in. It's difficult to stay focused during this part of the schedule and I was pleased with our focus."
Lynnia Noel paced the hosts with 13 points, followed by 12 from Tyra Carver. Despite a pair of players (Gabby Williams and Jo'Mani Thomas) pulling down 11 rebounds, none of the 14 Maple Leafs who saw the floor collected double-doubles. Sophia Sears added a game-high eight assists.
Adrian (3-4, 2-0 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) posted 29 points in the final stanza, the most of either team in any quarter. Kennedy Kunce scored a game-high 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while Antoinea McElroy grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
"I would have liked to see us maintain that focus for the entire game, because we slipped significantly as the game went on," Miller said. "But that's why we have practice tomorrow, to work on the mistakes and get ready for five straight ranked opponents. We're looking forward to this stretch to find out which parts of us will hold up against the best of the best and which parts we need to improve to compete with the top of the Crossroads League."
Rebounding and free throws were the order of the night: Goshen held a 61-50 edge on the glass despite allowing the most opponent rebounds of any game this year. The Maple Leafs cleaned the offensive glass 27 times, a season high, while the Bulldogs did so on 24 occasions. Goshen was 19-for-29 (66 percent) at the foul line to Adrian's 20-for-27 (74 percent).
"Ward and Williams were just too much to handle tonight and they really set the tone on the glass," Miller said. "Sears set the table really well for our scorers and juniors Calla Bartlett and Kelsey Fraley gave strong minutes and sparked our defense off the bench. This wasn't a clean game at all, but that's what you get after an off week. But we should always expect to get effort, team play and rebounds, and tonight was no different."
Goshen picked up its first win as a ranked team since 2004: the Maple Leafs were no. 24 in last week's edition of the NAIA Division II coaches' poll. On Saturday, the team will play its first game since 2004 in which both teams are ranked: no. 25 Lawrence Tech will provide the opposition, with tip-off set for 1 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
