Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Tyra Carver scored a season-high 20 points and Gabby Williams posted her fourth double-double of the year as the Goshen College women's basketball team moved to 9-1 on the season with a 72-53 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on the road Tuesday night.
Williams, who scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, was one of four Maple Leafs to finish with double-figure points. Jo'Mani Thomas scored 13 and Liz Tecca added 10. As a team, Goshen (9-1, 2-0 Crossroads League) grabbed 47 boards, including 19 cleanings of the offensive glass, while allowing 38.
Goshen led the game for 39 minutes and 14 seconds, sparing only the first five seconds before Tecca opened the scoring and 41 seconds in which the Cougars were ahead 3-2. The Maple Leaf advantage, which was 17-13 at the quarter, dwindled to one point twice in the second stanza. But the visitors scored the final 11 points before the half, nine of which came from Carver, and opened a double-digit gash that was never closed.
Sophia Sears finished with a game-high seven assists, including six in the first half, and Lynnia Noel was one behind with six for the game. Sears and Ward each added three steals.
Megan Beidelman posted a double-double of her own, with 10 points and 11 caroms, to lead Mount Vernon Nazarene (7-3, 1-1 CL) in both categories.
Goshen returns home Saturday afternoon to play its final home game before taking nine days off for final exams. The Maple Leafs will face the University of St. Francis, ranked no. 20 in the NAIA top 25 poll, with tip-off set for 1 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
