Undefeated Mount Vernon Nazarene Proves Too Much In Sweep

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — A run in the third set proved not to be enough as the Goshen College volleyball team could not stop unbeaten Mount Vernon Nazarene Wednesday night in Gunden Gymnasium.

The visiting Cougars won the match in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20. MVNU jumped out to a 6-1 lead to start the match and never looked back, with Goshen coming no closer than three points at 14-11. In the second stanza, neither team led by as many as three points until the Maple Leafs took a 15-12 edge, but the Cougars tied the set on two Annelise Rohrer kills and an Alyson Near solo block and then won seven of the final eight points.

Runs ruled the third stanza: with Mount Vernon Nazarene up 9-3, Goshen called timeout and won seven consecutive rallies, part of an 11-2 run, earning a 14-11 lead. But that triggered a Cougar timeout, and the visitors roared back to win nine points in a row themselves and take the set from there.

Rohrer led all players with 14 kills for the Cougars, who are 12-0 overall and 5-0 in Crossroads League play. Goshen, which drops to 8-5 and 2-4, was led by Lexa Magnuson with 10. Mount Vernon Nazarene had five aces, including three from Carolyn Beatty, and Near alone contributed four blocks while Goshen had five as a team.

The Maple Leafs are off until Wednesday, Sept. 23, when they host Indiana Wesleyan. First serve in that match is set for 7 p.m.
