Chances Elude Maple Leafs In 1-0 Senior Night Loss

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — The pleasant feelings and sad goodbyes of Senior Night were not enough to push the Goshen College women's soccer team to a win Saturday night. Despite several chances to level the score in the waning minutes, the Maple Leafs dropped their final non-conference home game to visiting Cornerstone University 1-0.

Josie Litty scored the lone goal of the match for the Golden Eagles, slotting a ball inside the right goalpost with 29:34 left before halftime.

Cornerstone finished the match with a 27-9 shot advantage. But with seven of Goshen's nine shots finding the frame and 11 saves combined from Molly Zook and Natalie Thorne, the Maple Leafs nearly tied the game with 7:17 to play.

Following a giveaway from the defense, junior Melanie Drinkwater eluded two defenders and was past all but one opponent when she fired from 20 yards away: Allison Snowden made the save to preserve the shutout.

The Maple Leafs honored seniors Anneliese Baer, Gina Berkey, Maria Bischoff, Juliana da Silva, Katelyn Vendrely and Malaina Weldy before the kickoff of their last game outside the Crossroads League.

Goshen falls to 4-4 on the season, with one more chance to finish non-conference play above .500. The Maple Leafs travel to Indiana Tech on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match. Goshen's reserves also face Hesston College at 1 p.m. Sunday, but that match does not count in the record books.
