Five Reach Double Figures In Wire-To-Wire CL Win

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — The Goshen College women's basketball team never trailed Wednesday night as it extended its Crossroads League winning streak to three games with a 78-62 win over Grace College.

Lynnia Noel scored 18 points for Goshen, including the foul shot that put the Maple Leafs up for good at 3-2 with 8:30 left in the first quarter. Gabby Williams added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds, earning her ninth double-double of the season, and a game-high five blocks.

The no. 21 Maple Leafs (14-5, 6-1 CL) jumped out to a 22-8 advantage after one quarter and led 41-31 at the intermission before outscoring Grace (5-14, 0-7 CL) by six points over the second half.

"We did a nice job countering any runs they had and even found spurts where we could extend the lead enough to give us a little breathing room," said Goshen head coach Stephanie Miller. "As I told the team, you just have to find ways to grind out wins on the road in any way you can and that's what we were able to do tonight."

Goshen led by as many as 17 points, a margin reached early in the second stanza, and held a double-figure edge for the final six minutes.

"After coming off a big week last week, we knew we would have to stay focused to get this win," Miller said. "Grace is much better than their record indicates and we knew that they would give us quite a challenge. They shot well and pushed us in some runs that had us back on our heels a little bit."

Jo'Mani Thomas scored 13 points, Tyra Carver 12 and Liz Tecca 11 for the Maple Leafs: Tecca and Noel were each 2-for-4 beyond the arc, an area where Goshen shot 55.6 percent for the game.

"Jo'Mani had a nice game tonight and was able to pick up some key baskets to kill runs, and we were all very pleased with Angela McLean's performance as she picked up extra minutes to replace the injured Keshia Ward," said Miller. "Angela needed to come in and hold things down defensively and get some rebounds for us and she did a fantastic job."

The Maple Leafs went 15-for-17 (88.2 percent) at the foul line while knocking down 47.5 percent of their field goals. Goshen also held a 30-27 rebound advantage and forced 19 turnovers.

Sophia Sears finished with a game-high nine assists to go along with six points: Haley Richardson had 18 points and six boards, both team highs, for Grace.

"Every win in conference play is a big win, especially if it's on the road, so I am very excited to carry over the momentum we had built last week," Miller said. "Now it's time to find a way to see if we can things going against the fourth-ranked team in the country. I believe our players are up for the challenge."

With league-leading Marian posting a victory of its own over Mount Vernon Nazarene, Goshen remains one game back of the top of the conference.

The Maple Leafs will have an opportunity to upend the Knights, who are ranked fourth in the country and an unbeaten 7-0 in league play, when the two teams meet Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Goshen's Gunden Gymnasium.
