Best Shooting Night Of Season Spurs Women Past Spring Arbor

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Haley Archibeque scored a career-high 17 points, sinking all six field goals she tried including five three-pointers, as the Goshen College women's basketball team knocked off Spring Arbor 95-69 Wednesday night.

Gabby Williams added 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting and Tyra Carver 19 points for the Maple Leafs (17-6, 9-2 Crossroads League). Goshen shot a season-high 63.9 percent from the floor, coming within 2.8 percentage points of the school record for a game, which was set in 1993.

"With several regulars out of the lineup tonight, we needed a step-up performance and that's exactly what we got," said Goshen coach Stephanie Miller. "What makes me the most proud of this team is how they respond when they have to deal with obstacles. They prove their mental toughness day in and day out, which is an amazing intangible quality to have in a team."

The Maple Leafs took the first lead of the game on a Carver bucket with 9:39 left in the first quarter: SAU (12-11, 4-7 CL) tied the game on the next possession, but Goshen scored again with 8:58 remaining and never trailed for the balance of the game.

Goshen scored at least 20 points in all four stanzas and led 21-17 at the quarter, 49-36 at halftime and 73-53 after three periods.

Williams also added 10 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season: Jo'Mani Thomas was second on the team with seven caroms but scored 12 points of her own. Goshen's top four scorers (Williams, Carver, Archibeque and Thomas) all shot 61.5 percent or better from the floor.

"We had really strong contributions from everyone in this team win, but Haley just got hot from downtown and did some explosive things to help the team tonight," Miller said. "This was just a preview of what's to come with this young lady and she isn't the only one who has been patiently waiting their turn and has some real potential headed into our future."

Liz Tecca had a game-high eight assists: Carver and Thomas posted five apiece while Sophia Sears had four. The Maple Leafs were credited with 25 dimes, a season high. Sears and Tecca scored eight points apiece.

"Those two shared the ball well and got things moving, and Jo'Mani Thomas had a very complete game, but the team stats are what stay with me the most," said Miller. "We shot 64 percent from the field, dished out 25 assists, only committed 11 turnovers and won the glass against a really feisty Spring Arbor squad."

Faith Johnson and Kylie Townsley scored 17 points apiece to pace the Cougars.

Goshen remains two games behind league-leading Marian, which used a last-second three-point shot to edge Indiana Wesleyan 51-48. That result extended Goshen's cushion to two games over third-place IWU, which is 7-4 in conference play.

The Maple Leafs host Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday as they look to extend their winning streak to four games. The contest is the lid-lifter of a doubleheader, with the Goshen and MVNU women's teams playing afterward, which is part of Coaches vs. Cancer week with proceeds going toward cancer awareness and research. Tip-off for the women is set for 1 p.m.
