Dozen Maple Leafs Crack Scoring Column In Victory

Box Score

GOSHEN — Tyra Carver scored 13 points and three other Goshen players hit double figures as the Maple Leafs knocked off Mount Vernon Nazarene 88-53 Saturday in women's basketball.

Lynnia Noel, Jo'Mani Thomas and Gabby Williams all scored 12 points apiece for GC (18-6, 10-2 Crossroads League), which led the entire game save ties at 0 and 13. All 14 Maple Leafs played at least seven minutes and 12 scored.

"I loved seeing everyone get in on the action today and also enjoyed how enthusiastic the bench was from start to finish," said Goshen head coach Stephanie Miller. "No matter who was in or out, the team was really getting into supporting one another from the bench. If you want to see if a team has good chemistry, watch the way the bench acts. That's a sure sign of togetherness when everyone is selfless and energetic for 40 minutes."

Goshen led 23-16 at the quarter, then outscored the visiting Cougars (10-14, 4-8 CL) 50-22 in the middle two periods and led by as many as 43 in the final stanza. The hosts went 22-for-35 (62.9 percent) from the floor in the first half and shot 54.8 percent from the floor for the game.

"We have been clicking offensively as a team in the last few games," Miller explained. "The difference is evident in the unselfish play with everyone passing and moving the ball more cleanly. Fewer turnovers and more team touches equals really good shot selection, which really helps your team's shooting percentage. It has taken us all of four years to get to the point where we could put these concepts together, but we have definitely grown."

Thomas led all players with five assists and was one of four Goshen starters to make more than half her shots. MVNU's starting five, in contrast, was 15-for-38. Megan Beidelman scored 20 points for the visitors.

Sophia Sears added eight points and Liz Tecca seven for Goshen: Allie Lake and Haley Archibeque scored six points apiece with the former setting a career high. Hanna Hochstetler matched her career-best scoring output as well.

"Having all 14 girls see time and pick up points, rebounds, assists or whatever they could do to help the team was great," Miller said. "I was especially pleased with the play of our reserves. Allie Lake hit some big shots and played really tough defense. Hanna Hochstetler did a strong job executing and getting good looks as well as holding down a few really tall opponents defensively."

With the win, Goshen is 18-6, matching last season's win total, and 10-2 in Crossroads League play, matching the school record for conference wins in a season set in 2003-04. GC remains two games behind league-leading Marian University, which won again Saturday, but now sits three games ahead of the third-place tie between Indiana Wesleyan and St. Francis with six games to go.

"We have had our eyes on the 10-win conference plateau ever since we fell short last year (finishing 9-9)," said Miller. "Now we are focused on controlling what we can control, taking one game at a time to get the highest seed possible in the conference tournament. IWU will not be looking to welcome us on Wednesday, so we have our work cut out for us."

The Maple Leafs travel to Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday. GC would clinch the season series with the Wildcats with a win.
