Second-Place Cougars Snuff Out Goshen Attacks In Sweep

Box Score

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene used a 5-0 first-set run to take the lead for good Friday night in a three-set win over Goshen College in Crossroads League women's volleyball action.

Goshen got off to the hot start and led 11-7 in the opening stanza: while the Maple Leafs had chances to tie the set at 23 and 24, they were unable to do so en route to a 25-23, 25-10, 25-17 loss.

The Cougars (20-2, 9-1), who received votes in the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches Poll and are undefeated in league play save for a loss to no. 23 Indiana Wesleyan, pounded out 47 winners and hit .333 for the match. Goshen (9-9, 4-6) finished with 21 kills.

Christy Swartzendruber led Goshen with eight kills, followed by Darienne Maust with six. Kristen Osborne had 15 winners and Annelise Rohrer 14 for the hosts. Kelsey Bryte posted just nine kills for MVNU, but hit .474 without an attack error.

"MVNU played amazing defense: we'd hit balls that should be winners, start celebrating and they'd get it back in play," said Goshen coach Jim Routhier. "On our side, Christy has been a very good all-around player. Tonight she kept us in the match but we had trouble finding the passes to use our middle hitters."

The Maple Leafs are off on Saturday but return to action with a pair of home matches next week, beginning with a meeting with local rival Grace at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
