Goshen Hitting Can't Keep Up With Cougars

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Lexa Magnuson finished the night with nine kills, two blocks and a .348 hitting percentage, but second-place Mount Vernon Nazarene swept seventh-place Goshen on Tuesday night in a Crossroads League volleyball match at Gunden Gymnasium. The Cougars never trailed after 7-7 in any set en route to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-18 win.

Kristen Osborn led all players with 16 kills and Annelise Rohrer had 15 for Mount Vernon Nazarene (26-4, 15-2), which finished the night with 49 winners against just 10 errors for a .322 hitting percentage. Six of those 10 errors were Goshen blocks: the Maple Leafs finished with a 6-5 edge in that category.

Hallie Vanitvelt matched Magnuson's kill total for the Maple Leafs (12-17, 6-10), who finished with 49 winners against 17 errors. Christy Swartzendruber finished with seven kills and led the team with 12 digs: the only MVNU player who succeeded more at returning attacks was libero Ashley Gingerich with 19.

A trio of Cougars hit .394 or better: Alyson Near led the team with eight winners on 16 tries for a .500 clip, while Osborn hit .406 and Rohrer .394 in the 69-minute match. Goshen's Lindsay McQuinn paced all players with three blocks, one more than the quintet who had two.

The visitors finished off the match with 20 winners among their 25 points in the final stanza: neither team hit lower than .156 in a set or had fewer than 11 kills, both marks set by the Maple Leafs in the opener.

Goshen returns to action Friday night when it visits Spring Arbor for a 7 p.m. first serve; the Maple Leafs close their regular season next Wednesday with a home match against Indiana Wesleyan.
