Quarterfinal Sweep Ends Leaf Volleyball Season

Box Score

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Darienne Maust finished her freshman season with eight kills as Mount Vernon Nazarene University swept Goshen College in a Crossroads League tournament quarterfinal at Ariel Arena.

Annelise Rohrer led the second-seeded Cougars (30-4) with 14 winners of her own as MVNU finished the match with 33 kills against eight errors in a 25-15, 26-24, 25-14 win. Goshen nearly matched the positive side of that total, finishing with 30 kills, but also racked up 24 errors on 137 attempts.

Christy Swartzendruber led all players with 19 digs for the Maple Leafs (13-19), accounting for more than a quarter of that form of Goshen's defense. Lisa Rodriguez added 16 assists, also a match high.

Mount Vernon Nazarene was able to assert itself at the net, finishing with six blocks to Goshen's one. Alyson Near was in on five of those stops herself, including the lone solo of the match. Kristen Osborn was the only player with multiple service aces.

The match was part of a Saturday on which the higher seeds went 4-0 in CL tournament quarterfinals: Mount Vernon Nazarene will host Taylor on Wednesday in a semifinal. Regular-season champion Indiana Wesleyan, which is already assured a berth at the national tournament, will host Marian on the other side of the bracket.
