Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Tyra Carver scored 14 points, Gabby Williams matched a career high with 14 rebounds, and the Goshen College women's basketball team won its 20th game of the season for the second time ever Wednesday night when it knocked off Grace 59-48 at Gunden Gymnasium.
The 18th-ranked Maple Leafs (20-7, 12-3 Crossroads League) took a 17-4 lead early in the second period while holding their opponents to two field goals on their first 20 tries. Grace (6-21, 1-14 CL) cut its deficit to 37-32 midway through the third before Goshen pulled away by shooting 57 percent in the final 20 minutes.
Carver knocked down six of her eight shot attempts, including a pair of 3s. Sophia Sears scored 13 points and went 3-for-3 from long range. Jo'Mani Thomas added nine points and seven boards of her own. Gabby Williams finished with nine points and Keshia Ward eight, each going 4-for-6 from the floor.
Goshen finished the game with a 47 percent clip from the floor after making 24 of their 51 attempts. The hosts were 6-for-15, 40 percent, from distance and attempted just two treys in the second half. The Maple Leafs claimed 40 rebounds while surrendering 36 but allowed their opposition to clean its own glass 14 times.
Grace shot 18 percent (6-for-33) in the opening 20 minutes and finished at 29 percent (19-for-66) from the floor. Haley Richardson led the Lancers with 15 points.
Goshen has reached the 20-win plateau just once before, the 2003-04 season in which the team went 26-9 and reached the NAIA national tournament. That team was 23-8 in the regular season. Twelve Crossroads League wins extends the current team's record for most victories in a conference season.
With the win, Goshen remains three games behind league-leading Marian with three games to play in the conference season. The Maple Leafs also remain two games ahead of third-place Indiana Wesleyan and, thanks to results farther down the standings, can finish no worse than third. GC visits Bethel College, which is tied for fifth, at 1 p.m. Saturday.
