Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Gabby Williams was nearly perfect from the floor, knocking down 10 of her 11 field-goal tries for a team-high 22 points, as the Goshen College women's basketball team knocked off Huntington 85-69 Tuesday night in a Crossroads League tournament quarterfinal.
The 15th-ranked Maple Leafs (24-7, 15-3) jumped out to a 23-10 lead at the quarter and a 46-23 advantage at halftime by shooting 64.5 percent in the first half. They would cool off to 51.9 percent in the second half but also added a 10-for-12 performance at the foul line. The Foresters (17-14, 7-11) shot 48 percent, better than their season average.
"Gabby was fantastic today and she was just so difficult to stop in the paint," said Goshen coach Stephanie Miller. "Her efficiency just keeps getting better and better. My team shared the ball beautifully tonight."
Lynnia Noel scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, for GC, which reached its highest-ever rating in the coaches poll at no. 15 Tuesday afternoon. Liz Tecca scored 13 points, while Tyra Carver was held to seven but grabbed nine rebounds to lead the team.
All told, the Leafs grabbed 15 steals, led by four from Noel. They dished out 21 assists on 34 made baskets, led by five from Thomas, who scored nine points, and followed by three more players with four apiece. The Foresters turned the ball over 19 times while posting 15 assists of their own.
"We were really tough in the hustle stats tonight and we really got after 50-50 balls as well as the glass," said Miller. "Lynnia hit some critical baskets for us and led a quartet of players with three or more steals apiece. The true stat of the night, however, was the 46 points in the paint. We never feel like it's easy to put Huntington away, but they didn't have any answers for our posts in the paint tonight and that was the real difference in the game."
Goshen took the lead when Sophia Sears scored eight seconds into the game and held the advantage the rest of the way. The Maple Leafs held a 46-20 edge in points in the paint, a 26-14 advantage in points in the paint, and a 25-7 margin in bench points.
Miranda Palmer scored 26 for Huntington to lead all players. Teammate Amelia Recker nabbed 10 rebounds, also a game high, and scored 11 points for a double-double.
The victory was Goshen's 24th of the season and the first time since 2004 that the Maple Leafs have won a postseason contest. 2004 was also the last time a GC women's basketball player earned first-team all-conference honors, which Sophia Sears did Monday, and the only time the Maple Leafs have gone to nationals.
"I'm just so proud of this team and the way have found a way to take every lesson they can from our failures and obstacles," Miller said. "To be able to get this tournament victory on our home floor in front of the crowd that has supported us so much this season is just simply amazing. I am so genuinely touched by the school, community, and alumni support of this group of young ladies and I'm glad we could come out and put on a good show for the fans tonight. We just keep adding new pages to our story, and what a good tale it is to tell. Everyone here at the college has worked hard to make positive changes and it's nice to be a rallying point for all of those who have put in that work."
Goshen will host no. 19 Indiana Wesleyan Friday night at 7 in a semifinal. Each team won at home during the regular season, with Goshen winning 75-67 on Jan. 6 and IWU winning 69-40 on Feb. 3.
