Box Score UPLAND, Ind. — Sydney Stein scored a career-high 19 points and Lynnia Noel posted her second double-double in 11 days as Goshen College knocked off Taylor University 70-61 Saturday afternoon in Crossroads League women's basketball at Odle Arena.
Noel scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 13 caroms, 12 of which came on the defensive glass. The rebound tally is a new career high for the senior and also represents the most by a Goshen woman in a game this year.
The visiting Maple Leafs (10-8, 5-3) gave up a game-opening basket to Monica Compton after 30 seconds, but scored the next nine points to pull ahead 9-2 and never trailed again. GC led 19-9 at the quarter and 33-22 at halftime before extending that edge to 60-32 with 8:08 remaining.
Taylor (9-11, 4-4) made 10 of its last 16 baskets to close the final deficit to nine points, but not before Goshen led by 20 with four minutes to play.
"We did an outstanding job of executing the game plan for three and a half quarters," said Goshen coach Stephanie Miller. "We focused on making Bradbury work for every shot and then not allowing second-chance points. I was disappointed in the way we lost control and concentration at the end of the game, but Taylor is an excellent team with some real scoring ability and we did a solid job overall."
GC also got 11 points and eight rebounds from Gabby Williams and nine boards from Angela McLean. Stein went 8-of-9 from the floor and Noel 8-of-14, pacing a 43.9 (29-for-66) percent shooting effort for the visitors.
"Angela & Gabby both did strong work defensively on Bradbury and really challenged her to get good looks," Miller said. "They also put in big work on the glass. Sydney has really stepped into her role and is playing with more and more confidence. She and Lynnia had an excellent scoring nights for us, but the work they put in on the glass was most impressive to me."
Through three periods, Taylor shot 31.7 percent (13-for-41) before raising that total to 39 percent (23-for-59). Kendall Bradbury, who entered the day with the second-most points per game in NAIA Division II, led TU with 15 points and nine rebounds, one point more than Josie Cobb.
The Maple Leaf defense forced 19 turnovers, while the offense fetched 18 offensive rebounds and finished with a 45-32 edge on the glass overall. Back on the floor, Sophia Sears led all players with four assists.
The win, coupled with Saint Francis' upset of league-leading Marian, moved Goshen within two games of the top of the Crossroads League: the season reaches its midpoint next Wednesday, although it will take until Saturday for every pair of teams to have met once.
"I like my team's mental approach right now and if we can keep putting defense first, we have a chance to be in the hunt down the stretch," Miller said. "This team is putting some things together and is growing in their confidence. This was a big win for us and we look forward to getting a second crack at Huntington this week."
Goshen returns home for three of its next four games, beginning with a 7 p.m. tip-off against Huntington on Wednesday. The game is a rematch of the conference opener, which Huntington won 86-83 in overtime on November 22.
