PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Goshen College's baseball team played its second doubleheader in as many days Sunday, falling 13-4 and 13-7 on the road at the University of Pikeville. The Bears took all four games of the weekend set against the Leafs.
Despite allowing 13 runs in each of the day's games, Goshen's offense dusted off the cobwebs and combined to score 11 runs on Sunday after struggling to plate a pair of runs Saturday.
As they had the previous day, Goshen (0-4) got on the board first in game one when Preston Carr scored on Vincent Caschera's RBI single in the top of the first before Pikeville (7-4) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
The Leafs retook the lead in the top of the third when Spenser Triplett and Cody McCoy crossed the plate to give Goshen a 3-2 lead. The Bears would break the game open in the fourth with 4 runs before putting the game away with a pair of runs in the fifth and 5 more in the sixth.
Carr led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run, his first of the season, to cut the deficit to 13-4 but that was as close the Leafs would come in the opener.
Travis Grimm took the hill for Goshen and struck out a pair in 3⅓ innings before giving way to Colton Daniel, Anthony Todaro and James Stricker. Carr and Caschera led the Leafs' offense with Carr scoring 2 runs with an RBI and Caschera driving in a team-high 2 runs. Clinton Stroble II collected Goshen's other RBI. Ryan Hartig was the Leafs' most consistent hitter with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate.
Pikeville's Bryce Carden worked six innings for the Bears and struck out 7 while giving up 3 runs on 8 hits. Chase McKinney pitched the seventh for Pikeville and gave up a run on 2 hits. Jorge Perez, Justin Beatty, Anthony Roberts, Daniel Sterenberg and Shane Williams each drove in 2 runs apiece with three other Bears collecting one RBI each.
Game two saw Goshen again jump out to an early lead when Carr and Colby Malson scored in the top of the first. Pikeville would chip away at Goshen's lead with a run in the first and the second before Connor Clemens scored on a fielder's choice in the third to give Goshen a 3-2 lead.
But the Bears would again burn the Maple Leafs with big innings as Pikeville struck for 5 runs in the third and 4 in the fourth inning. Goshen would counter by plating two runs in the fourth and a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
Goshen sent Triplett to the mound in game two and the freshman recorded all three of the Leafs' strikeouts in 3 innings of work. Brad Lantz and Malson pitched in relief for Goshen.
Hartig collected a team-high 3 RBI in the second game on a 2 for 4 performance. Quinlan Armstrong plated a pair and Stroble and Kody McGuire each drove in a run. Hartig, Caschera and Stroble each went 2 for 4 and Malson led the team with 3 runs scored.
Max Hall, James Brooks, Tommy McCormick and Peyton Dove all took a turn on the mound for Pikeville, with Hall collecting the "W" in three innings of work. Dove led the offense with 3 RBI as Perez and Alec Barba each knocked in 2. Brock Damron scored 3 times with Beatty and Roberts each crossing home plate twice.
The Maple Leafs will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois, for a mid-week doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST at Schaaf Field.
