GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College baseball team got three-fourths of the way to a doubleheader sweep against Calumet College of St. Joseph on Wednesday, taking game one 10-4 and tying 4-4 in game two which was called after seven innings due to darkness.
Goshen (14-9-1) got the ball rolling early in game one as the Leafs struck for 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Calumet (3-19-1) closed the gap to a single scoredwith a 4 run third inning but the Leafs put the game away with a run in the third and a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Brandon Vires got the start for Goshen in game one and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings of work. Travis Grimm and James Stricker each pitched 2 innings in relief, with Stricker compiling a team-high 2 strikeouts.
Vincent Caschera and Cody McGuire each drove in 3 runs apiece to lead the Leafs, with Quinlan Armstrong, Clinton Stroble II, Ben Longacre and Connor Clemens each knocking in a run. Armstrong and Longacre both crossed home plate twice as Brad Stoltzfus collected a team-high 3 hits in 4 plate appearances.
Calumet's Kai Sinclair started on the mound and exited after 3 innings with 6 runs allowed on 8 hits. Garrett Stanley threw 2 innings in relief and Trystyn Shoonover pitched the final inning. Sam Martinez Jr. plated a pair of runs to lead the Crimson Wave with Patrick Holbrook and Justin Rohrs each driving in a run.
Game two got underway with Calumet taking an early 4-1 lead after three innings before Goshen tied the score with a three-run sixth inning. The teams would play out a scoreless seventh inning, but that was as far as the game would get as diminishing daylight resulted in the game being called a tie at 4-4.
The deadlock was only the ninth tie in 1,891 games in the program's history, and the first since April 21, 1992, breaking a streak of 1,122 games played to a decision for Goshen.
Seth Lapp got the start and gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits in 4 innings of work for the Leafs. Blake Collins and Spenser Triplett threw 2 innings and an inning in relief respectively, with Lapp and Collins each recording a strikeout.
Clemens recorded 2 RBIs to lead the team with Triplett and Chandler Ingle each driving in one of Goshen's other 2 runs. Courtesy runner Brad Lantz led the Leafs with 2 runs scored in the contest.
The Crimson Wave's John Wilson went 5 ⅓ innings with 4 runs against on 7 hits while recording 5 K's. Ryan Slavey finished off the sixth inning and Justin Kortlang threw the final inning. Holbrook, Matthew Jackson and Nicholas Campanile each recorded one of Calumet's 3 RBIs, with four different players scoring a run.
Goshen will be back in action on Friday afternoon opening a weekend set with conference opponent Marian University in Indianapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
