INDIANAPOLIS — The Goshen baseball team traveled to Indianapolis to play conference opponent Marian University Friday afternoon, with the Knights taking both of the day's contests. Marian used early offense in game one and a late inning rally in game two to complete the sweep.
Marian (8-12, 2-2 Crossroads League) opened the day's scoring with a 7 run outburst in the bottom of the second to take a lead they would never surrender. Goshen (14-11-1, 4-3) answered with 5 of their own in the top of the third inning but the Knights scored 6 runs across the third and fourth innings to take a 13-5 lead. The Leafs scored a run in the fourth and 3 in the sixth but ultimately fell 13-9 in game one.
Braedon Evans got the start in game one for Goshen and went 1 ⅔ innings before giving way to Kyle Kotecki, James Stricker, Seth Lapp and Anthony Todaro out of the bullpen. Preston Carr led the offense with 3 RBIs on a 2 for 4 performance at the plate. Colby Malson drove in 2 runs as Brad Stoltzfus, Clinton Stroble and Cody McCoy each knocked in a run apiece. Game two saw Goshen jump out to an early 6-1 lead which they took into the seventh inning, where a furious rally saw the Knights score 6 runs across the final 3 innings to take game 7-6.
Michael Walker took to the mound for the Leafs and worked 6 ⅔ innings, allowing three hits over the first five, before Travis Grimm and Spenser Triplett pitched in relief. The workload pushed Walker into the top 10 in school history with 207 career innings worked.
Caschera knocked in 3 runs to lead Goshen with Armstrong bringing home 2 and Ryan Hartig driving in Goshen's other run. Stoltzfus and Caschera each scored twice.
Marian's Kevin Hammond threw 3 innings, with Cody Chandler, James Catanzarite and Leo Lopez all pitching in relief, with Chandler earning the "W". O'Malley, Turk, Lopez and Jordan Jackson all drove in one of the Knights' 4 earned runs. Jackson scored a team-high 2 runs in the victory.
