SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — The Goshen College baseball saw their recent skid reach 5 as the Leafs were knocked off by conference opponent Spring Arbor University on Wednesday afternoon, falling 8-2.
Goshen (14-14-1, 4-5 Crossroads League) got on the board in the first inning when Quinlan Armstrong was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Preston Carr for the game's first run.
Spring Arbor (10-18, 3-5) tied the game up in the third before Vincent Caschera's RBI double in the fourth scored Austin Rook to regain the lead for the Leafs.
The Cougars responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. Spring Arbor added a trio of insurance runs in the fifth before scoring once more in the eighth inning to push the lead to the eventual score of 8-2.
Colby Malson got the start for the Leafs and threw 4⅔ innings before giving way to Seth Lapp, Braedon Evans and Blake Collins. Collins collected a team-high 2 strikeouts in the loss.
Armstrong and Caschera each drove in Goshen runs with Caschera, Carr and Rook each collecting one of the Leafs' 3 hits on the day.
Spring Arbor sent Andrew Wright to the mound and he turned in 6 innings of 3-hit baseball with 2 earned runs against and 6 strikeouts. Drew Weston and Elijah Brook pitched in relief for the Cougars.
Francisco Ondina led the Cougar attack with 4 runs batted in with James Hall driving in a pair of runs and Chris Triplett and Christian Davis tallying an RBI apiece. Alex Holly scored a game-high 3 runs with Hall scoring twice.
Goshen will be back in action on Friday afternoon when they host Crossroads League opponent Bethel College for the first of a three-game weekend series with the Pilots. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
