WINONA LAKE, Ind. — Goshen College scored the afternoon's only earned run, but it was Grace College who took the victory in Friday's Crossroads League baseball matchup as a quartet of errors led to the Lancers scoring five unearned runs for a 5-1 win.
Grace (14-25-1, 6-16 Crossroads League) opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third after a dropped third strike and subsequent wild throw with two outs allowed the inning to continue. The very next batter, shortstop Austin Baker, doubled down the line in left and Grace held a 2-0 lead.
Goshen (21-24-1, 9-13) got on the board in the sixth after bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with no outs. Pinch-runner Ben Longacre scored when Quinlan Armstrong grounded into a double play. Grace would add an insurance run in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit and tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
Despite out-hitting the Lancers 7-4, the Leafs' fielding issues cost them as neither starting pitcher Michael Walker or reliever Travis Grimm allowed an earned run. Walker allowed three unearned runs on three hits with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work, bringing his career innings total to an even 230. Grimm saw a pair of unearned runs score on one hit with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.
Seven Maple Leafs got hits in the contest with Preston Carr, Ryan Hartig, Connor Clemens and Colby Malson all also drawing walks.
David Anderson picked up the win for Grace, allowing six hits with a game-high eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Aaron Voirol and Kyle Brunner each threw in relief and picked up a punchout for the Lancers.
Baker led Grace with 2 RBIs while Gavin Bussard, Hunter Ackerman and Chase Baker each drove in a run apiece. Shay Hepler scored twice for the Lancers.
The Maple Leafs will look to bounce back on Saturday when they finish the series at Grace in an afternoon doubleheader. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
