Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. — Donnae Lipinski scored a career-high 12 points for the second straight game Saturday, but Grace College nevertheless topped Goshen College 64-55 in Crossroads League women's basketball action at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
The Maple Leafs (1-23, 0-12) raced to a 9-2 lead on the strength of three straight makes, capped by a Carley O'Neal 3-pointer at the 5:40 mark of the first quarter. Grace (12-12, 5-6) responded with an 8-2 run to close within 11-10 barely two minutes later; after Sydney Stein and Mariah Roe scored to re-extend Goshen's lead, the Lancers scored nine of the last 11 points and led 21-17 at the quarter.
Grace continued to pull ahead in the second stanza, shooting 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) from the floor while holding Goshen to half that figure. Kyannah Stull led the hosts with six points in the quarter: despite no Lancer scoring more than twice, the team managed an 18-10 edge and led 39-27 at the intermission.
Both sides mustered five field goals and 12 points in the third period: Goshen augmented its scoring with a pair of foul shots from Roe while Grace had the quarter's only two triples. The Maple Leafs used a 5-0 run in the fourth quarter to get within eight points at 57-49, and after a stop had a chance to close within two possessions just after the four-minute mark. The team went 0-for-2 with a pair of turnovers on its next four trips, though, and by the time Lipinski scored with 1:19 to play, Grace's lead was back in double figures.
"We had some good runs and put together a couple strong quarters, but we just didn't play up to our potential," said Goshen coach Stephanie Miller. "For us to win against any of these Crossroads League teams on the road, we have to."
Grace converted Goshen's 20 giveaways into 21 points, while Goshen got 11 takeaways and scored eight points from them. The Maple Leafs shot better from the floor (39.3 percent to 38.7 percent) but the Lancers finished with seven 3s to Goshen's three.
"We rebounded well and some halftime adjustments to our defense which helped slow Grace down, but our biggest Achilles heel was the 21 points that Grace scored off our turnovers," Miller said. "We just didn't play a clean game. We were scattered in our offenses, didn't share the ball particularly well, and struggled to get in rhythm. We fought to stay in the game, but never really gave ourselves a solid chance to win it."
O'Neal scored 12 points to match Lipinski for Goshen's team high while Roe and Stein added 10 points apiece. Stein led the Maple Leafs with eight rebounds: O'Neal finished with a team-high three assists and Haley Archibeque two steals. Keyaira Murff chipped in a block. Goshen finished with four double-figure scorers for the second straight game and third time this year.
"Sydney hit the glass hard and played strong physical minutes for us, and Haley made some nice plays, deflected and stole a few balls on defense, and controlled the ball well for us today," Miller said. "It was nice to see four players in double digits as well."
Grace's Micaela Box scored a game-high 14 points; the Lancers also got 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting from Brooke Sugg and 11 points from VIronnica Drake. Pam Miller led all players with 12 rebounds.
Goshen finished the game with 40 rebounds to Grace's 34, but the Lancers finished with 14 assists to Goshen's six, getting four dimes from Drake and three from Box, while posting 20 steals to Goshen's 15 behind three apiece from Sugg, Drake and Lexi Minix.
Goshen closes its current stretch of four games in five days on Wednesday evening with a visit to Bethel College in Mishawaka. The battle for St. Joseph River valley bragging rights begins at 6 p.m. in the Wiekamp Athletic Center, followed by the men's game at 8.
