Box Score MARION, Ind. — Hallie Vanitvelt paced Goshen College with 5 kills Wednesday night as the Maple Leaf women's volleyball team dropped a three-set Crossroads League match at Indiana Wesleyan by set scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-12.
The Wildcats (16-10, 11-3) opened an 11-4 lead in the first set before the Maple Leafsgot a 7-1 run on the serves of Jennifer Ritchie and Tessa Clark to get back within 19-16. IWU retaliated with four straight points on Kendyll Gebert's serve to pull ahead 23-16 and sealed the stanza with Kelly Miller's fifth kill.
IWU again took an early edge in the second set, this time by winning the first four points, with Marci Miller getting four winners among the Wildcats' first seven points. Vanitvelt and Elizabeth Breckbill each added kills later in the set for Goshen, which was able to get as close as seven points but no closer as the Wildcats never trailed on the way to a 2-0 lead in the match.
Goshen (8-17, 2-11) took a 6-3 lead in the third set before the Wildcats raced to the comeback win. Ana Collar finished the set with 7 kills for IWU: over the entire match, she posted 14 to lead both teams.
Kelly Miller added 8 winners and Megan Graber 7 for Indiana Wesleyan, which also got 26 assists from Gebert and 13 from Alex Falcone. Collar added 10 digs for a double-double and Bailey Green led all players with 14 digs.
Naomi Willis paced Goshen with 9 assists, 3 more than Ally Roehr. Seven Maple Leafs had blocks at some point, which meant that Sydney Cruz was the only Maple Leaf with more than one. Clark and Brooklyn Harris each added aces while Riley Woods chipped in a team-high 6 digs.
Notable Numbers:
44/17: The Wildcats accumulated 44 kills and 44 assists in the match; Goshen also had the same number of assists as kills (17), but with the additional bonus of getting 4 kills from uniform number 17 (Cruz).
