Red-hot third quarter powers Goshen past Crimson Wave

WHITING, Ind. — Haley Archibeque backed four double-figure scorers with a career-high 7 assists and Mariah Roe led all scorers with 17 points Thursday as the Goshen College women's basketball team entered Christmas break with a 68-56 win at Calumet College of St. Joseph.

The Maple Leafs (7-8) broke open a 28-28 halftime deadlock with a 22-8 third-quarter advantage: Goshen shot 38 percent (6-of-16) from the floor while adding 9 foul shots and forcing 8 turnovers on defense, holding Calumet to 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) shooting. Six GC players scored in that 10-minute span, paced by Roe's 7 points and 5-for-5 foul shooting.

Graysen Cockerham and TaNiece Chapman scored 13 points apiece and Keyaira Murff tallied 10 for the Maple Leafs; Cockerham led the team with 7 rebounds. Goshen out-rebounded Calumet 41-33.

Calumet got 11 points each from Duneya Shatat and Elizabeth Davis, the latter of whom was perfect on 4 field-goal tries. Elri Liebenberg recorded a team-high 9 rebounds and Davis led the Crimson Wave (2-13) with 3 assists.

Each team finished with 21 field goals and six three-pointers. the Maple Leafs posted better percentages by virtue of taking two fewer shots, but made their biggest move at the foul line. Goshen finished 20-for-28 (71.4 percent) compared to Calumet's 8-for-10 mark.

Goshen never trailed in the first quarter, although its early 13-5 lead was trimmed to 17-16 when Davis scored with 9 seconds remaining. Calumet scored the first six points of the second quarter and led by as many as 5 before Alyson Prigge tied the score at the foul line 9 seconds before halftime.

That free throw was the first point of a 19-5 Maple Leaf run that spanned the intermission and most of the third quarter. Goshen led by double figures for the last 14 minutes, including an edge of as many as 18 points before two 6-0 Crimson Wave runs.

Goshen finished with 10 steals and 13 points off turnovers: Murff and Chapman each contributed blocks.

The Maple Leafs are away from the court for a week over Christmas before reconvening in Houston for their final games of 2018 in the Celts Classic at the University of St. Thomas. Goshen will open the event against Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Friday, Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. EST.
