O'Neal's 16-Point Effort Comes Up Short At Taylor

Box Score

UPLAND, Ind. — Carley O'Neal led her team with double-figure scoring for the second time this week as Goshen College lost a 78-47 women's basketball decision to 16th-ranked Taylor University on Saturday in Odle Arena.

O'Neal scored 16 points for the Maple Leafs (1-27, 0-16), which would have been a career high before she poured in 20 Wednesday night. Mariah Roe added eight points and Alyson Prigge seven for Goshen, which got seven rebounds from Keyaira Murff.

Taylor (19-9, 12-4) put a trio into double figures, with guard Lauren James hitting 8 of 11 shots including seven 3-pointers off the bench. Abby Buchs added six triples and 18 points in 20 minutes; while Kendall Bradbury didn't get the hot hand from distance, going 0-for-4, she added six foul shots to finish with 14 points and 9 rebounds.

The Trojans led 18-9 at the quarter and 40-23 at halftime, tossing up 30 shots from long range in the first half and hitting nine. Goshen went 10-for-26 (38.5 percent) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, outdoing Taylor's 36.8 percent clip, but was outrebounded 23-20 and included only three 3-pointers.

O'Neal's best scoring quarter came in the third, when she drained two of both kinds of field goals as the Maple Leafs scored a game-high 15 points. Unfortunately, it was also Taylor's best-shooting quarter as the Trojans went 8-for-17 from the floor and 5-for-8 from long range for 25 points.

Logan Kyre, Prigge and Hanna Hochstetler all got on the board in the fourth quarter for Goshen. A dozen players saw action on both sides, all for at least four minutes.

The Trojans finished 27-for-68 (39.7 percent) from the floor, but more than half of their shots came from 3-point range, where they went 16-for-45 (35.6 percent). Goshen shot 18-for-60 (30 percent) overall and 6-for-22 (27.3 percent) beyond the arc.

GC finished the game with more blocks and steals than Taylor: Prigge and Taylor Roasa each chipped in to the former category while six players posted steals. No player on either team had more than one takeaway.

Aubrey Wright and Josie Cobb each led Taylor with five assists: Roe's three paced the Maple Leafs.

The Maple Leafs pay Spring Arbor a visit at 7 p.m. Wednesday before closing their season at home against fifth-ranked Marian University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
