Sixth-Inning Comeback Falls Short To Close Spring Break Trip

Box Score

FLORENCE, Ky. — Colton Daniel and Baylee Young combined to throw four hitless innings out of the Goshen College bullpen, but Robert Morris University did its damage in the first two innings on Sunday to top the Maple Leaf baseball team 4-1 at UC Health Stadium.

The Eagles (10-3) used a double and a triple with two outs to go up 2-0 after one frame. They started the second with two singles sandwiched around a fielding error before going up 4-0 on a fielder's choice for the inning's first out.

Kyle Kotecki, Daniel and Young combined to retire 13 of the 17 men they faced the rest of the way, with the only exceptions being walks and errors as no Eagle reached as far as second base. Daniel tossed three innings and Young one; each hurler's strikeout count matched his inning total.

On the other side of the coin, Goshen (5-8) managed five singles and a double at the plate. RMU starter Tyler Kirkwood took the win, working 5 2/3 innings and holding the Maple Leafs to three singles through five innings.

GC's best chance to score came in the top of the sixth, when leadoff man Cody McCoy singled to center and Ben Longacre followed that with his sixth double of the week. Following a strikeout, Ryan Hartig drew a walk to load the bases and bring Colby Malson to the plate as the tying run.

Malson worked a walk of his own, forcing in a run and chasing Kirkwood in favor of Michael Pinkston. With the batter now representing the go-ahead run, Pinkston got Kody McGuire to ground out to third and end the threat. Pinkston would retire the side in four batters in the seventh inning to earn the save.

Nolan Holcomb went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Goshen attack; Ryan Hartig also reached base twice on a hit and a walk. RMU totaled four hits and four walks; no player had more than one of either, but Matt Cole and Austin Nelson each reached base through both methods.

The Maple Leafs are idle for the bulk of the coming week before taking on Cleary University in a three-game series next weekend. The set consists of a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday at Northwestern High School in Kokomo.
