Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Cody McCoy recorded a run-scoring single and Kody McGuire doubled Tuesday as the Goshen College baseball team dropped an 8-1 decision at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in a Crossroads League game rescheduled from March 20.
The Cougars (18-12, 7-5) matched the inning numbers with their first three sets of runs, scoring once in the first and twice in the second before putting four on the board with two outs in the fourth. The hosts put up 10 singles and two doubles to go with five walks on the afternoon: center fielder Nick Moser went 4 for 5 with three runs while left fielder Devin Pearl was 3 for 4. Pearl and Ashton Myers each drove in two runs and drew walks as well.
Goshen (12-17, 4-7) scored its run in the sixth after loading the bases without the benefit of a hit: Clinton Stroble II drew a walk, Ryan Hartig was hit by a pitch and Colby Malson reached on a fielder's choice before McCoy singled up the middle. Cougar starter Mark Rader got out of the inning with a strikeout and a flyout, stranding three of the nine Goshen runners left on base to end his day with 105 pitchers.
Mount Vernon Nazarene got that run back in the bottom of the inning on a Myers sacrifice fly after a bunt hit and two walks. The Cougar offense stranded 10 men but set reliever Payton Booth up with a seven-run lead entering the seventh: Booth tossed three scoreless innings to get the save.
Goshen used five pitchers in the loss, with four of the five throwing 18 pitches or fewer after Camm Nickell started and fired 3 2/3 innings. Kyle Kotecki retired all four men he faced before Colton Daniel, Toby Fox and Colby Malson each worked an inning.
GC's six hits all came from different players: Hartig and Ben Longacre each reached by hit and by walk, while Stroble went 0 for 2 but walked twice. Stroble and Bobby Garcia each reached on fielder's choices as well.
While the game was supposed to kick off a week that saw the Maple Leafs play seven games on five out of six days at four sites in three states, Mother Nature had other ideas: Goshen's doubleheader at Siena Heights (Tuesday) and single home game against Grace (Wednesday) have both been postponed. With Thursday already scheduled as the week's lone off day, Goshen returns to action in a three-game series at Bethel this weekend.
