Box Score HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Ben Longacre set a single-season record for most doubles by a Goshen College baseball player on Friday as the Maple Leafs upset Huntington University 9-3 in Crossroads League action.
Longacre's 19th two-bagger of the year came in the sixth inning, part of a 3-for-5 performance out of the second spot in the lineup for the Maple Leafs (20-24, 10-14). Kody McGuire also recorded three hits as Goshen assured itself of no worse than a tie for the final playoff spot in the Crossroads League.
Huntington (17-19, 15-7) got three hits apiece from Adam Roser and Adrian Perez, with the latter adding a solo homer in the eighth. Goshen starter Travis Grimm held the Foresters to one run on seven hits in six innings of work, however, picking up his fifth win of the conference season and seventh of the year as a whole.
The Maple Leafs took the lead for good with the game's first runs, a three-run third that started with back-to-back-to-back singles from Longacre, Clinton Stroble II and Ryan Hartig. Hartig's base knock scored Longacre before Colby Malson reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. McGuire hit into a fielder's choice to score the second run before Noah Holcomb grounded out to plate Hartig for a 3-0 lead.
The Foresters picked up their first run two innings later on a Roser sacrifice fly before Goshen scored in each of the last four frames. Longacre's double scored Brad Stoltzfus in the sixth for a 4-1 lead while a Cody McCoy sacrifice fly brought in Malson after a leadoff double in the seventh.
Stroble knocked in another run after one-out walks to Stoltzfus and Longacre in the top of the eighth inning: McGuire added a two-run single three batters later to put Goshen up 8-1. After Perez's homer in the bottom of the inning, GC loaded the bases on three straight one-out walks in the ninth with Longacre driving in the final run.
Huntington's final tally came after two quick outs in the ninth: Jamar Weaver doubled to right, took third on a fielding error and scored on Roser's single. Maple Leaf reliever Camm Nickell got the final out of the game on a called third strike, though, closing out a three-inning stint on his 50th pitch for his first career save.
Grimm's win moved him into a tie for fourth place in GC history for a single season, while his 14th career victory put him in ninth place outright. Stoltzfus' two walks and Longacre's three hits pulled each player into a tie for 10th in that single-season category. Hartig also hit safely twice, breaking a tie with Joe Salazar and claiming fifth on GC's career hit list.
While Goshen's win proved a benefit to the Maple Leafs' playoff hopes, the Maple Leafs were unable to clinch a Crossroads League tournament spot outright as Grace defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene. Goshen can clinch a playoff berth outright on Saturday with a win, a Grace loss, two Mount Vernon Nazarene losses or two Saint Francis losses.
Goshen and Huntington conclude their series tomorrow on the final regularly-scheduled doubleheader Saturday of the Crossroads League season. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at HU's Forest Glen Park.
