Maple Leafs Hit Way To Sweep of Roosevelt

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Ten kills apiece from Hallie Vanitvelt and Elizabeth Breckbill powered Goshen College women's volleyball to its first sweep of the season Tuesday night as the Maple Leafs topped Roosevelt University in Gunden Gymnasium.

An 8-1 run undid a four-point Laker lead late in the first set before Goshen reeled off 17 of the first 22 points in the second stanza and cruised to a 25-20, 25-11, 25-15 win in an hour and 10 minutes.

Playing their first match of the year outside of a tournament setting, the Maple Leafs (3-2) racked up 42 kills against 8 errors for a .395 hitting percentage along with five aces and four blocks. Shelbey Younts finished with 12 aces and Ally Roehr with 10.

Roosevelt (0-1) got 25 kills, including 10 from Kendra Lee, but also accumulated 18 errors and five service miscues. Lee's 11 digs led all players, topping by one the figure recorded by Goshen's Meghan Manley. The Lakers recorded three blocks, including a pair of solos by Makenzie Cooper.

After ties at 8 of the first 12 opportunities, Roosevelt used a 7-1 spurt including three Cooper kills and a block to open a 17-13 lead in the lid-lifting stanza. Vanitvelt recorded three kills in the set's last 15 points as the Maple Leafs roared back for a 1-0 lead.

The winner of the first set has gone on to win all five of Goshen's matches this season, but for the first time, the lead was wire-to-wire. Roosevelt never led in the second set, and although the Maple Leafs never won more than four straight points, the hosts had a double-digit lead for almost half of the set.

The two sides split the first 18 points of the third period before Breckbill and Vanitvelt each put down three kills in a 9-2 run to claim a 17-11 lead. Naomi Willis got the honor of serving out the match as Goshen's last five points came on forced errors.

The Maple Leafs hit the road again this weekend for four matches at the Early Bird Classic hosted by Michigan-Dearborn. Goshen opens the event by playing Lawrence Technological University at 3 p.m. Friday.
