Cockerham sets another career high behind five 3s at Saint Francis

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Graysen Cockerham set her second career scoring high in two weeks with 21 points Saturday, but Goshen College dropped a 74-50 Crossroads League women's basketball decision to the University of Saint Francis on the USF campus.

Kara Gerka scored 20 points to pace Saint Francis and pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds, while Lauren McBryar's 13 points made her the only other player on either side to reach double figures in scoring. Keyaira Murff led Goshen with 7 rebounds, outpacing TaNiece Chapman and Alyson Prigge by one apiece.

The Cougars (13-7, 5-3) led 16-12 at the quarter and 32-19 at halftime on the strength of 9 first-half offensive rebounds, getting 9 points from Gerka in the second quarter to enter the locker room with their largest lead of the day.

Cockerham led Goshen (7-13, 0-8) with 10 points in the first half, sinking 2 of her game-high 5 triples.

Each team posted its highest-scoring quarter of the afternoon in the third, combining to shoot 13-for-26 from the floor as USF outscored Goshen 23-18. Cockerham scored 8 of Goshen's last 10 points and Sydney Crowe added 8 for the Cougars. Saint Francis kept up its 50 percent shooting over the last 10 minutes to record the final score.

Cockerham finished 7-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-8 from 3-point range, leading all players in both makes and attempts in both categories. Gerka went 7-of-9 at the foul line, where the Cougars recorded 18 makes to Goshen's 6.

USF shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) on the whole and 30.8 percent (8-for-26) from long distance. Goshen went 37.5 percent (18-for-48) and 44.4 percent (8-for-18), respectively. The Cougars added a 36-31 rebound edge to their 10 steals and 4 blocks.

Emma Applegate of Saint Francis led all players with 4 steals, one more than GC's Haley Archibeque and USF's Lauren McBryar. McBryar racked up a game-high 5 assists while Murff and Gerka swatted 2 shots apiece.

Goshen is off until Wednesday, when the Maple Leafs continue their streak of three straight games against Cougars with a visit to Mount Vernon Nazarene. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Ariel Arena.
