Cockerham gets first double-double as Leafs allow fewest points in 2 years

Box Score

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Graysen Cockerham posted her first career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but Mount Vernon Nazarene University got a last-second basket by Dani Ellerbrock to top Goshen College 43-42 in Crossroads League women's basketball Wednesday at Ariel Arena.

Alyson Prigge fished out 11 rebounds of her own to tie for the game high for Goshen (7-14, 0-9), which led 14-11 at the quarter and 26-25 at halftime. The Maple Leaf defense held the Cougars without a 3-pointer, keeping the Cougars to an 0-for-12 mark from long range, and pulled down 44 rebounds.

Taylor Gregory led all scorers with 17 points for MVNU (11-10, 4-5), who also got 10 points from Elizabeth Fee. Ellerbrock added a game-high 9 assists, although the final basket was one of only two made field goals on the night for the point guard. Goshen's defense held MVNU to 32.3 percent shooting from the floor at 20-for-62, with the Cougars' two starting guards limited to 26 percent between them.

Mount Vernon Nazarene led by four points with 7:00 remaining in regulation before Goshen sealed off the basket: the hosts wouldn't score again for more than 5 1/2 minutes. Haley Archibeque and Graysen Cockerham put together a 5-0 run to give GC a 41-40 lead at the 5:05 mark.

When the Cougars did pull back in front on a Gregory score with 1:21 to play, Cockerham answered 16 seconds later to regain a one-point Maple Leaf edge. Four timeouts later, the teams traded misses and Gregory's first crack at a game-winner caromed out of bounds with 4 seconds left. Ellerbrock converted from the left side of the lane as time expired to seal the win.

The 43-point defensive effort was Goshen's best showing in more than two calendar years since a 57-37 win over the same Mount Vernon Nazarene team on Jan. 11, 2017.

Archibeque paced Goshen with 3 steals and 4 assists while Gregory also led MVNU in rebounds with 10.

Goshen hosts Spring Arbor University on Saturday at 1 p.m., kicking off a doubleheader that also sees the two schools meet in men's basketball at 3. In the event that the predicted winter storm this weekend makes it necessary for the Maple Leafs to adjust their schedule, stay tuned to GoLeafs.net for the latest information.
