Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Six Goshen College women's basketball players scored in double figures Wednesday night as the Maple Leafs got back in the win column with an 85-76 win over Bethel College in Gunden Gymnasium.
Graysen Cockerham led the team with 15 points and Goshen led for every second of the second half after seizing control with a 12-1 run heading into the locker room. Caitlyn O'Neal added 14 points on four 3-pointers.
Keyaira Murff led all players with 8 rebounds and Haley Archibeque posted a game-high 6 assists while scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively, as Archibeque set a season high. TaNiece Chapman contributed 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and Mariah Roe chipped in 14 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 mark at the foul line.
Goshen (8-15, 1-10 Crossroads League) shot 85 percent from the foul line, a season best among games with 10 or more attempts, and set a new high-water mark for the season with 85 points. The last time the Maple Leafs scored that many points in a conference game was in February 2016 when they posted 92 against Taylor.
Kelsey Brickner led all scorers with 28 points and Maci Heimlich added 26 for Bethel (10-13, 2-9). The duo accounted for more than two-thirds of their team's points, including 17 of the 25 field goals. Heimlich had 21 points at halftime after going 7-for-9 from long range over the opening 20 minutes.
GC converted on 53 percent of its field-goal tries, going 28-for-53, and shot 44 percent from downtown. Five players made multiple 3-pointers and all eight players who saw action took at least two shots. The Maple Leafs also came out with a 28-25 rebound advantage and forced 9 steals, including 3 takeaways from Archibeque.
The game also marked the first time since a December 2015 win over Saint Francis that six Goshen players hit double figures in the scoring column. Archibeque, who played her third career Crossroads League game that day, was the only Maple Leaf to appear in both games: she did not score against USF, hitting double figures for the first time in a win over Spring Arbor the following month.
After an opening quarter that saw a field-goal try every 20 seconds and finished in an 18-18 deadlock, Goshen shot 10-for-14 (71 percent) with five triples in the second quarter. It was 43-38 Maple Leafs at halftime, and the lead grew to 53-40 in the third quarter after back-to-back Chapman scores. At that point, Goshen had scored 22 of the last 28 points.
Bethel trailed by 10 with 10 minutes to go and got a Heimlich 3-pointer to pull within 79-75 in the final minute, but the Pilots had to foul to stop the clock and Goshen closed out its win at the foul line. O'Neal, Cockerham and Archibeque each connected on a pair of free throws and the Maple Leaf defense held Bethel to a single point the rest of the way.
Quoting Goshen head coach Stephanie Miller:
"Tonight we brought a complete team effort to the table. Bethel really played well and hit some absurd shots, and we just kept answering, executing and rebounding. We broke their press with the intent to do damage, which allowed us some high-percentage looks. While we shot the ball well, the keys to the game were the 21 assists on 28 shots and the 17-of-20 mark at the foul line. We really shared the ball well.
"I'm so happy for the young women in this locker room. They really have deserved to see results for the last two weeks in particular. Early in the season, when we were winning more, I was worried about our mentality. We turned to excuse-making and negative thinking quickly when things went wrong. But what I'm most proud of is how tough times have really connected the locker room and bonded these ladies. The positive energy and professionalism with which they have approached this tough stretch have allowed them to grow into a strong-willed bunch. When we get confidence in our closing ability, things will get very interesting with this group.
"There were so many key performances tonight. Graysen always seemed to hit a key bucket when we needed it, while Mariah did a nice job aggressively attacking the lane, sinking the paint and getting to the line. Taniece Chapman commanded attention in the paint and cashed in on some dump-downs as well as moved the ball well out of double-teams to set us up for good shots.
"The players of the game tonight, however, were the senior guard combo of Haley and Caitlyn, and the powerful post presence of Keyaira Murff. Haley was a general out there, calling sets, getting us up the floor, setting people up, and hitting open shots with confidence. This was her best all-around game of the season. Caitlyn shot the ball well and looked smooth and quick in her decision-making. She has come a long way in the last two weeks. Finally, I was so darn proud of Keyaira Murff. She deserves this and needs to trust herself more. Tonight she was as good as I ever remember her defensively, but she is always a monster on that end of the floor. Tonight was about asserting herself on offense and she showed everyone just what she is capable of."
Up Next: Goshen starts a two-game road trip on Saturday by heading south to Indianapolis to take on seventh-ranked Marian University. The Knights are three-time defending conference champions, but fell into a tie for first Wednesday night with a loss at Taylor and would be the second seed if the season ended today. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in the Physical Education Center.
