Lancers top Maple Leafs in 79th installment of rivalry

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — TaNiece Chapman scored 12 points to lead the Goshen College women's basketball team Tuesday, but Grace College's second-quarter run pushed the Lancers to a 69-43 Crossroads League victory in the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

Brooke Sugg scored 20 points on 10-of-20 shooting and added 6 three-pointers for Grace (13-12, 7-6), which scored 15 of the last 19 points going into the intermission and never trailed in the second half.

Graysen Cockerham pulled down 9 rebounds for the Maple Leafs (8-17, 1-12), leading all players and beating out Chapman by one board. Alyson Prigge added 8 points, including a perfect 4-of-4 mark at the foul line.

Goshen scored the game's first 6 points and led by as many as 7 points, holding its host scoreless from the floor for more than half of the opening period while draining 8 of its first 13 shots. Haley Archibeque scored the Leafs' last four points of the quarter, matching Cockerham for the team high, as Goshen led 12-8 at the quarter.

Grace rebounded to shoot 49 percent in the second half, adding a 7-for-14 mark from distance as the Lancers put up 39 points in the final two quarters. Goshen finished with a perfect record on free throws and a 38-36 rebound advantage, but the Lancers made up those differences by forcing 20 turnovers and turning them into 27 points.

Caitlyn O'Neal led the Maple Leafs in both 3-pointers and assists; Kamryn Hostetler and Lauren Godfrey dropped 4 dimes apiece to lead Grace.

For the Maple Leafs, the contest was the first conference matchup on a Tuesday outside of Thanksgiving in five years. With northern Indiana in the throes of some of its coldest weather since record-keeping began in 1893, the game was moved up from its original Wednesday date because both schools will be closed Wednesday.

Up Next: Goshen returns home to take on Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday. The 1 p.m. tip-off is the first of two games in Gunden Gymnasium; the Maple Leaf men take on Indiana Wesleyan University at 3.
