Chapman double-double paces Maple Leafs in defeat

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — TaNiece Chapman wasted no time posting her first double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 12 points and leading all players with 13 rebounds Wednesday as the Goshen College women's basketball season opened with a 46-43 loss to 21st-ranked Aquinas College in Gunden Gymnasium.

The Maple Leafs (0-1) led 25-17 at halftime on the strength of a defense that held Aquinas to 1-for-14 shooting in the second quarter, then mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to tie the score at 43 before the Saints (1-0) pulled ahead in the final minute.

Daz'Sha Day led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting to go with 6 rebounds for Aquinas. Camaryia Williams pulled down 11 rebounds and 4 steals, leading the team in both categories and contributing the go-ahead foul shot with 10.5 seconds remaining.

Goshen got 7 points from Kiarah Copeland and 6 from Graysen Cockerham, who also recorded 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Five Maple Leafs had multiple steals, led by Chapman with 3, as the team finished with 13 takeaways.

GC also pulled down more than a third of its rebounds on the offensive glass: Chapman led the team with five offensive caroms while Cockerham and Mariah Roe added three each en route to a team total of 17.

Defense was the order of the night in an early-season matchup that included each team's pregame rituals being stalled by a volleyball match that delayed tip-off to 9:07 p.m. Aquinas shot 27.8 percent (15-for-54) from the floor while Goshen was 17-for-65 (26.2 percent). The teams combined to force 41 turnovers and wen 5-for-27 from long range.

Aquinas scored the first four points and led 13-11 at the quarter before Goshen racked up 8 steals in the second period, taking a 7-point lead into the locker rooms. The Maple Leafs ran that margin into double figures on a Copeland triple 25 seconds into the third quarter. The quarter ended in a 33-33 deadlock.

The teams traded baskets down the stretch: Jakarri Allen's old-fashioned 3-point play put the Saints up 38-35 with 8:05 remaining, but Aquinas didn't score again from the floor until a Day triple made it 43-39 with 2:41 left. Copeland and Janara Flowers each scored to square things at 43 with 65 seconds showing.

Aquinas used most of the shot clock before a team rebound returned the ball to GC with 34.7 seconds to play. The Maple Leafs returned the favor, running off 22 seconds, but Williams' steal sent her to the foul line where she made 1 of 2 shots.

Goshen called timeout to bring the ball to the forecourt and had a look at the basket, but missed the shot with 6 seconds to go. Marissa Brady, who led all players with 4 blocks, iced the game with two foul shots at the other end and a 3-pointer at the horn came up short.

Goshen is idle this weekend before returning to the court for the first of three games next week. GC hosts Holy Cross College at 6 p.m. next Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader: the Maple Leaf men host Northwestern Ohio in their home opener at 8.
