Breckbill goes big in five-set loss to IU South Bend

Box Score

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Elizabeth Breckbill matched her career high with 20 kills Saturday afternoon, but the Goshen College women's volleyball team was unable to spoil Senior Day at Indiana University South Bend as the Titans won a non-conference match in five sets.

Haylee Pennington added 12 kills for the Maple Leafs (7-24) while Jennifer Ritchie added 10 to go with her team-leading 25 digs. Tessa Clark chipped in 22 digs from the libero position, Pennington had 16 and Olivia Koop recorded 10.

Breckbill also led Goshen with a pair of aces and 4 blocks with the team racking up 8 stuffs at the net, although IUSB would post 11. Ally Roehr had 25 assists to lead the team and Shelbey Younts recorded 24.

The Titans (16-11) finished with 62 kills to Goshen's 59, although no single player matched Breckbill's output. Julie Brown led IUSB with 15 winners, Sydney Lubinski had 13 and Robbie Berg added 12. Lubinski and Hannah Marchand each posted 6 blocks.

McKenzie Powell led the home side with 28 assists, Samantha Hockstra picked up 26 digs and Courtney Lengacher served a pair of aces.

The first two sets came down to the slimmest possible margins: IUSB led the opener until Goshen went on a 7-2 run en route to a 19-17 lead and 25-23 win, then the Titans had 10-3 and 8-3 runs in a second set that saw them level the match at 26-24.

In a reversal of fortune of sorts, neither team jumped out to a lead in the third set: 22-18 was the first time that either side led by as many as four points. Goshen won each of the last five rallies to win 25-18 for a two-sets-to-one lead.

The Titans went up 5-1 in the fourth set, although Goshen was able to negate that advantage with an 8-2 run that involved two aces and three kills from Breckbill alone. Brown and Powell sparked a 7-3 IUSB response, though, putting the home side up 20-17, and from there the Titans forced a deciding set with a 25-20 win.

After the teams split the first four points, a 5-0 run on Robbie Berg's serve broke open the fifth set and it finished 15-11.

Goshen hit .195, its best percentage of the match, in the second set, which saw it put together 15 kills on 41 swings. IU South Bend hit .300 with 17 winners in the fourth stanza.

Goshen returns to the Crossroads League for its final four matches of the season, which come in an eight-day span starting next Tuesday. The first match produces the longest road trip as the Maple Leafs visit Mount Vernon Nazarene University for a 7 p.m. first serve.
